Shirin Akter Shela is probably over the moon right now. Why you ask? Well, it’s just been the biggest month of her life as she was crowned Miss Bangladesh at the end of October. In doing so, the beauty queen became the first person from a Muslim-majority country in South Asia to compete for the title of Miss Universe. There have been other Muslim contestants in the coveted competition but they have all been from the Middle East or Africa.
She was crowned by the Bollywood diva Sushmita Sen, who has won both the titles of Miss World and Miss Universe in 1994. Shirin fought against Alisha Islam and Jessia Islam in the capital city of Dhaka and emerged victorious.
Shirin’s father was the one who inspired her to push her own limits. He is a member of the Border Guard Bangladesh and has inculcated in her the love for her country. One of her motivations for winning the competition was also for the “betterment” of Bangladesh. Kudos to this stunner.
According to Metro UK, this Physics student will represent her country in the 68th edition of the competition where Bangladesh will compete for the first time.
At the event, Sushmita Sen proudly spoke about the fact that they were creating history. She said, “I am very glad to be a part of this momentous occasion. Tonight we make history. Do you want to know how? We make history because, for the first time, a girl from Bangladesh will represent this beautiful country at Miss Universe competition.”
According to The Tribune, she further added, “Twenty-five years ago, I represented India at that same competition, and my life was changed forever.”
The competition will take place in Atlanta, Georgia on the 8th of December and we are thrilled. As far as India goes, Vartika Singh from Lucknow is going to represent us in Miss Universe 2019.
