Jewellery Can Make Your Skin Turn GREEN! What?!?

When accessory brands come up with such pretty junk jewellery, we can’t help but binge on it. Who wouldn’t want to wear jewellery that looks expensive but costs so little! Unfortunately, we do pay a price for wearing it, we just don’t realise it! I’m sure many of us have noticed that the cute ring or necklace we purchased at a pop-up store left green marks on our skin. Bummer, right? Some pieces turn green or get discoloured in a very short span of time, sometimes only after a couple of wears and that can be really disappointing.

So why does it happen?

Such jewellery is usually made of copper. That greenish stain you notice is usually caused by the sweat on your skin reacting with the metallic properties of copper. When sweat salts come in contact with copper, the acid erodes the outer lining of copper and this rubs off onto your skin and produces a dirty greenish hue. But you will be happy to know that this stain is NOT harmful for you or your skin.

How to avoid it?

Now that we know it is safe to wear junk jewellery, we can continue indulging in it! To avoid the greenish stain though, just apply a coat of transparent nail paint on the part of the jewellery that comes in contact with your skin, like the underside of a ring or bracelet. This creates a thin unnoticable barrier between the metal and your skin and ensures the copper doesn’t react with your skin.
