Yesterday, I was rummaging through my makeup drawer to find my blue eyeshadow palette and guess what? I found it, but it was covered with mould. I immediately threw it away. I realised it’d been lying in my kit for two years! Apart from reading labels, you may not know when a makeup product has gone bad. However, they’re obvious signs if you’re paying attention. If you yet continue to use them, you may get a skin allergy and experience itchiness. First things first, let me tell you how long makeup products last for. Let the beauty class begin!
The Shelf Life Of Most Common Beauty And Makeup Products
Lip Gloss – 1 year.
Foundations & concealers – 6 months to 2 years.
BB & CC creams – 6 months to 1 year.
Lipsticks – 2 years.
Nail polishes – 18 months to 2 years.
Micellar water – 6 months.
Mascara – 3 to 6 months.
Crean Cleanser & tone – 6 months to 1 year
Perfumes – 8 years
Eyeshadow & blush powders – 1 to 2 years
Eyeliner & kajal – 3 to 6 months.

Do A Colour Test
Take a look at your foundation and eyeshadow, do you think that the colour has slightly faded away. If it doesn’t match your skin or looks discoloured, it may have gone bad. There also a change in texture. If it’s foundation, you’ll notice that the product’s texture becomes clumpy and chunky (could be bacterial growth). Usually, foundations have a uniform and smooth texture. If your products look and feel funny, throw it in the bin immediately.
Is The Formula Separating?
This is for liquid makeup products especially. If you notice a separation between the formulas, give it a good shake. If it doesn’t blend that I’m afraid it’s lifespan is over. Product formulas are meant to be tight and if it isn’t, you must say your goodbyes.
Take A Good Whiff
Smell is very important when it comes to determining whether a product has expired or not. You’ll notice that the product starts to smell off (like gasoline, chemicals or vinegar) Imagine putting that on your skin. Not a good thing for sure.
Look Out For White Spots & Chalky Layers
White spots on the tip of your kajal and eyeliners are not good signs. The same goes for the filmy and chalky layer that forms on the surface of the product. The moment you spot either of these, don’t think twice about throwing it in the dustbin.
