11 Truths About *Virginity* That EVERY Girl Needs To Know!

We hear a lot of things about sex. From discussing details about what happens the first time we do ‘it’ to the inner workings of the vagina, there is a lot of talk going around. There are some good things and some bad things, but are they all the truth? We decided to clear the air once and for all. Here are 11 truths about virginity that every girl should know.

1. The hymen is not a closed membrane

The common perception about virginity is that the hymen is something that needs to be broken. When in fact, the hymen is a thin membrane which usually already has an opening to let out menstrual blood and other secretions. So yes, losing your virginity doesn’t mean you ‘break open’ the hymen – rather, it tears a bit for the opening to become bigger.

2. Your hymen is a part of your body forever

No, it doesn’t disappear once you have sex. It’s a membrane that remains a part of your body for good!

3. A little warm-up is important

If you are planning to lose your virginity then it may be a good idea for you to practice, i.e., masturbate, before you go all the way. Also, don’t forget to spend some time on foreplay, you will need all the help you can get to make your first time worthwhile.

4. Your hymen might be undetectable even before your first time

The hymen can break because of several reasons other than sex. Yes, we’re talking about mundane activities like riding a bicycle or even practicing gymnastics. So by the time you actually have sex, there is a good chance that your hymen is already broken.

5. You don’t HAVE to bleed the first time

As we said before, your hymen can be undetectable by the time you have sex for the first time, making it a strong possibility that you don’t bleed.

6. You can get pregnant the first time

We can’t stress the importance of using condoms, even if you are having sex for the first time in your life. Remember it as a rule of thumb – no matter what the situation is, if you have sex without proper protection, you can get pregnant!

7. Sex doesn’t change much

Other than being susceptible to sexually transferrable diseases, and some hormonal changes that might occur because of regular sexual activity, losing your virginity doesn’t affect your body all that much. And no, no one can tell by simply looking at you that you’ve had sex.

8. Virginity cannot be medically ‘proven’

Contrary to popular belief, there is no way that you can medically measure whether a person is a virgin or not. As we discussed, a broken hymen is not enough proof of a woman’s ‘virginity status’.

9. But hymens can be medically restored

As crazy as it may sound, there is a way to restore broken hymens. Known as ‘Hymenorrhaphy’, it is a medical procedure to repair a woman’s torn hymen, and it costs a bomb!

10. Virginity can mean a lot of different things

The word ‘virginity’ can mean a lot of different things for different people. It’s a personal opinion that one should develop over time. There is no need to freak out if the rest of the world doesn’t share the same ideas as you. There is no right or wrong when it comes to this!

11. You don’t HAVE to save it or lose it

Let’s talk about the birds and the bees, shall we? Staying a virgin or not staying a virgin is a decision only you have to take, based on how comfortable you are. If you want to have sex, do it! If you don’t, then don’t. It’s as simple as that.
