#SafeDiwali: How To Have Fun (And Keep The Environment Happy)

POPxo Team  |  May 6, 2016

Diwali is the season of lights, happiness and new beginnings. While we encourage you to have a blast, we also want you to be a little bit more cautious in your approach. Here’s a list of 10 things you should avoid doing this Diwali for a safe, happy festive season!

1. Don’t Gorge on Sweets

Of course, diving into a few laddoos is the done thing, but you don’t want to regret eating one too many! Exercise some self control. In fact – continue exercising (yes, we know it’s party season). Don’t forget – you Christmas vacay on the beach (swimsuit alert) is not too many months away.

2. Don’t Burst Fire Crackers

We and the helpless animals can do without the extra air and noise pollution – you are literally blowing your hard-earned money! Light some diyas, lanterns and candles and say bye-bye to pollution. If you must, stick to ones that produce the least amount of nasties.

3. Don’t Celebrate on the Streets

Partying, drinking and bursting crackers on the roads is all pretty dangerous and inconsiderate to others. Move the party indoors.

4. Don’t Gamble Excessively

Playing teen patti is fine, but especially with gambling moderation is key. You don’t want to lose too much of your hard earned moolah. Know your limits, walk away from the table once they are reached.

5. Don’t Drink and Drive

Do we really need to say more?!

6. Don’t Splurge on an Ensemble That You’re Only Going to Wear Once

That designer outfit may be gorgeous, but the practical rules of shopping still apply – even during the festive season. Think about how often you’re going to wear your new outfit post-Diwali to justify a big splurge. Luckily it’s around the wedding season, so you are going to have lots of opportunities!

7. Don’t Work on Diwali

Duh? Who works on a holiday? It’s a time meant to be spent with family and friends.

8. Don’t Recycle Gifts

Giving away stale dry fruits is not going to reflect well on you! Think of fun innovative gifts to give, exercise creativity, even make your own!. Why not give away all the extra mithai/ dry fruits, which you are definitely not going to eat, to charity while it’s still fresh?

9. Don’t Leave Your Travel Bookings for the Last Minute

Unless you want to pay triple the price for tickets and hotels.

10. Don’t Stress about Your Problems (and Have Some Fun!)

Party with your family and friends, make some colourful rangolis and revel in the true spirit of Diwali.
