I was scrolling through Twitter on Saturday and noticed a pattern. A lot of people had prefixed the word ‘Chowkidaar’ to their account username. It all started with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After all, do have a better trendsetter than him?
PM Modi started a campaign on Twitter on Saturday ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He wanted to counter Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s Chowkidar Chor Hai jibe at Modi to claim irregularities and favouritism in the Rafale deal, a charge the BJP-led government has rejected.
Modi took to Twitter to launch his campaign called Main Bhi Chowkidar and changed his username to Chowkidar Narendra Modi.
Many BJP leaders including Smriti Irani, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, former Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yeddyurappa and others joined the pledge.
And now, Twitter is flooded with memes on the whole movement.
