#MythNoMore: Regular Trims Make Your Hair Grow Faster? Here’s The Truth!

We’ve all been through that phase, when we are trying to grow our hair and end up steering away from snipping tools altogether. And then we were told that getting regular trims helps grow your hair faster. It is widely believed that getting regular trims not only keeps the hair healthy and split ends-free, but also makes the hair grow faster. This is why many of us, with healthy hair, choose to visit the every 2 months for a trim. Of course, we also cringe as he/ she chops it.

How I Went About It:

I too, almost a year and a half ago, decided to grow out my hair. You know, just to see how really long tresses looked on me. I went 4 months without a haircut (and I’ve never gone that long without a hair appointment, by the way) after which I had a chat about this with my friend who is blessed with long, luscious hair. She said to me that growing her hair out to that length took about 2 years, but she got it trimmed every 2 months and that I should do the same. I blindly followed her advice and gradually realised that it was definitely not helping with my hair plan. I even tried regular hair massages with the Kama Ayurveda Organic Neem Oil (Rs 675) but to no avail. This was when I decided to speak with an expert about it.

What The Expert Says:

Here’s what Delhi-based dermatologist, Dr. Kiran Lohia at Lumiere Dermatology had to say: “Regular trims are helpful for hair with split ends. If you have split ends, your ends will look damaged and curl inwards making the hair look shorter. However, hair growth has nothing to do with trimming. Your hair grows from the roots and is affected by nutrition, genetics, and treatments done at the roots. Trimming can only make you feel like it is growing because you lose those frizzy, split ends.”

The Final Verdict:

While going for regular trims is great because it keeps split ends at bay and dead hair too, it isn’t an effective method if you’re looking to grow out your hair. So if you want to clean up your act, change your style or get rid of split ends, then go for a trim. But if it is hair length that you want to maintain, stay away from those scissors, ladies.

Use the Moroccanoil Treatment (Rs 2,880) on the length of your hair to maintain hair health and keep it hydrated.
