Be You-nique: These Beauty Rules Are Meant To Be Broken

Have you ever been told to match your lip liner to your lipstick? Or only use blenders to apply make-up? Meh, you needn’t listen to them (us)! You see, make-up rules make great guidelines, but they aren’t written in stone. After all, make-up is a way for you to express yourself, and you can’t do that with rules putting you in a box. Here are 8 make-up rules worth breaking. (You’re welcome!)

1. Wear A Primer Under Your Foundation

Yes, the primer is fab to make a smooth canvas, but is it necessary every single time? We don’t think so. Instead of using a primer, apply a mattifying moisturiser so that your skin looks and feels hydrated. Leave the primer for the time you layer on make-up.

POPxo Recommends: Khadi Natural Herbal Face & Body Moisturizer Rose & Honey (Rs 220)

2. Always Pair Smokey Eyes With Nude Lips

Usually, smokey eyes with a nude lip is the holy grail combination. While we’re not suggesting that you go bold on both, lips and eyes, we want you to know that playing around with certain shades could work wonders. Instead of going nude, you could look at opting for a pink-nude, deep mauve or even a chocolate shade.

POPxo Recommends: NYX Professional Makeup Ultimate Shadow Palette (Rs 1,725)

3. Bold Eye Make-Up Doesn’t Complement Bold Lipstick

As long as you can pull the bold trend off, nothing is impossible. Sure the thought of having bright-coloured lips and eyes seems daunting at first, but with the right shades, you can ace the look like a pro. For example, rich bronze eyeshadow will look stunning with brown or marsala lips.

POPxo Recommends: Maybelline New York Color Sensational Diamonds Eye Shadow (Rs 460)

4. Apply Your Base Before Your Eye Make-Up

If you’re new to applying eye-makeup, it’s best that you apply it first before you set your base. That way, even if you make a mistake, you can easily clean up the excess product from your skin without having to worry about re-doing the whole base again.

POPxo Recommends: M.A.C Prep + Prime Skin Base Visage (Rs 2,300)

5. Use Only Beauty Blenders & Brushes To Apply Make-Up

Most make-up artists use brushes and beauty blenders to keep the application hygienic. You can use your fingers to blend eyeshadow, BB cream and foundation for a natural look. Plus, the warmth of your fingers helps blend in make-up very easily.

POPxo Recommends: Natio Complexion Perfection Foundation Sponge (Rs 550)

6. Use Lip Liner To ONLY Line Your Lips

You don’t really need to use a lip liner to define your pout. Instead of outlining your lips, use the liner to fill in your lips. Once that’s done, apply your lipstick. This way you could also experiment with different lip liners and lipsticks to create your perfect shade!

POPxo Recommends: L.A Girl HD Pro Setting Powder (Rs 1,000)

7. Only Apply The Second Coat Once Your Mascara Is Dried Up

We’re often told to apply a second coat of mascara after powdering our lashes or letting the first coat dry. In this case, it all boils down to personal preference. In fact, some women prefer to apply a second coat while the first coat is still wet. They feel that applying the second coat of mascara instantly after the first helps shape and groom the lashes even better.

POPxo Recommends: Lakme Eyeconic Curling Mascara (Rs 263)

Break the rules ladies, YOU do the make-up, it doesn’t do you!
