What’s Yours Will Find You: Adhila & Fathima’s Intense Love Story Will Leave You Teary Eyed

Recently, pictures from a pretend lesbian wedding went viral on social media. Turns out the girls in the picture were lovers, Adhila Nasrin and Fathima Noora. The gorgeous duo were dressed to the nines in stunning bridal lehengas as they celebrated the love they share for each other.

However, behind the sweet smiles in the pics lies a story of hardship and struggle and wanting to stay together in a society that doesn’t readily accept same-sex relationships.

Adhila and Fathima met each other in 2021 in Saudi Arabia. Their friendship soon turned into something deeper, and the girls realised they wanted to spend their lives with each other. But because they were planning to go to college in Kozhikode, Kerala, they decided to put their plans on hold. They wanted to convince their parents about their relationship, but only after their studies.

However, things didn’t go according to plan. It all went south when one day Adhila and Fathima’s families came to know about their relationship. Their parents asked them to stop being in touch and refused to send them to the same college. But the girls continued to stay in touch through social media and did not let this hurdle come in the way of their love.

Even after restrictions grew at home, Adhila and Fathima were determined to stay together, so they hatched out a plan. In May this year, the two left their homes and sought refuge at a shelter home in Kozhikode. Things got even worse when their parents along with relatives reached there, and used all methods, including physical torture to separate the two. Fathima’s parents also filed a complaint against Adhila with the police, stating that she had abducted their daughter.

Finally, to no avail, Adhila took to social media to share her story. She reached out to Vanaja collective, an NGO that works for historically oppressed communities. In a three-part Insta post, Adhila spoke extensively in Malyalam about how their families with the help of the police, separated the lovers from the shelter home and have kept them divided since.

Soon after, Adhila and Fathima’s injustice went viral on the ‘Gram and the girls decided to reach the Kerala High Court for justice. In June this year, the court delivered it’s judgement and ruled in favour of the girls. They informed both parties that Adhila and Fathima can live as they please as they are of age.

Well, we’re so happy that things worked out for Adhila and Fathima. Although article 377, which criminalised same-sex relationships was scrapped in 2018, couples continue to face harassment and stigma in the society. We hope that this story of love and struggle will inspire others to live and let live.
