Winter Skincare 101: How To Update Your Routine To Match The Season

With the days getting shorter and nights longer, it can mean only one thing —- Winter is coming! As the season slowly changes from thunderstorms and rain to cool evening winds, our skincare routine needs a little upgrade as well. You probably know by now that many factors affect your skin type, one of them being the season and climate. So, the routine you created at the start of quarantine is not going to work for this new chilly season. But don’t let the panic set in! Scroll down to learn how to keep your skin happy by effortlessly upgrading your monsoon skincare routine to match winter.

Make Your Skin Winter-Ready With These Steps

For most of us, winter means dealing with dry, tight skin and white patches all around the face. To avoid this from happening and to maintain soft, supple skin, follow these 6 easy tips to winter-proof your skincare routine.

Switch To Hydrating Cleansers

Cleansing your face twice a day doesn’t change, regardless of the season. But during winter, since the skin is already dry, this might cause a few problems. To avoid skin tightness or irritation, replace your clarifying cleanser with a hydrating one. Pick face cleansers that are fragrance-free and have a creamy texture to avoid stripping away the natural oils from the skin. Look for cleansers that are enriched with Hyaluronic acid to help retain water and plump up the skin.

Use A Heavy Moisturiser

Winter can wreak havoc even on the most non-problematic skin type. So, whether you have dry, oily or combination skin, when the temperature drops, you need to replace your gel moisturisers with something that has a heavy consistency. To avoid drying, peeling and even tight skin, switch to richer creams and lotions. These will help lock in the moisture, keeping your skin hydrated and glowing, all day long.

Use Mild Exfoliants

Dead skin cells along with other pollutants tend to settle on the surface of the skin all year round. To keep your pores from getting clogged, it is important to exfoliate your skin at least once a week, even during winter. But to keep the irritation and rashes at bay, use mild exfoliants to clean the skin and remove impurities without damaging the superficial layer of the skin.

Use Hydrating Sheet Masks

While your Sunday self-care routine won’t change, the products you use might differ a bit during wintertime — this includes your sheet mask. Winter can be tough on the skin, due to the mixture of indoor and outdoor temperature and the continuous use of hot water. This can strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and dull. So, once a week, be sure to use a hydrating sheet mask to soothe the skin and keep it hydrated, soft and supple.

Use Tinted Moisturisers

Since the skin tends to look a bit dull during the cold season, here’s where tinted moisturisers come to the rescue. If your skin tends to look dull and dry, these moisturisers are a lifesaver as they even out your skin tone and add a natural radiant glow to the skin. Pick a tinted moisturiser that is rich in humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin to give you healthy-looking skin.

Add A Serum To Your Skin Care Routine

Due to the high humidity levels during the monsoon, most of us excluded serum from our skincare routine, but once the temperature drops, your skin needs all the nourishment it can get. Serums are known to penetrate deep into the epidermis to quench your parched skin and keep it supple and happy during the winter season.

This winter, enjoy radiant, hydrated and glowing skin by following these steps.
