Monotone, But Make It Colourful: How To Ace Deepika Padukone’s Style With 4 Easy Hacks

Right from Deepika Padukone‘s femme fatale look for a recent awards show to that chic bodycon jumpsuit that took the internet by storm, there is something about her styling that truly has our heart. Call it stylist Shaleena Nathani’s magic or the ‘Ranveer Singh effect’, DP for sure has risen as a true fashionista of late. While it is hard to put a finger on this remarkable transformation, we’d like to believe that we have found the key to all these power looks. What is it you ask? *Drum Rolls* It’s monotone baby! Okay, we accept the fact that it was a no brainer and there was hardly anything to boast about there. However, will we get some credits if we make monotone styling a cakewalk for you all? Oh, and along with product recommendations, lot’s of them? Intrigued? Read on!

Monotone dressing might appear a little tricky because no one wants to run the risk of looking like they have been doused with a tank full of whatever colour they decide to monotone with. For all those inundated by the idea, here are some fool-proof ideas that will turn you into a monotone pro:

Layer It!

Since monotone styling really really limits your colour palette, playing with the silhouette is the easiest way to style the look. Think of layering a sharp vest with some sheer fabric. You can also go a little more playful and add a sexy draped skirt to the look. Trust us, there are endless ways to rock layering in monotone colours and they are all fun! Take inspiration from the POPxo-approved black monotone looks below:

Waistcoats and Bermuda shorts are the hottest fashion buys right now and we really couldn’t stop ourselves from mixing the two. You can complete the look by wearing a sheer organza shirt under the waistcoat and embellished shoes. For those of you, who like it slightly dramatic, we have added a draped skirt and a suave cami that can be worn under the organza shirt to finish the look. You can add the waistcoat for some extra layering here as well and finish it off with the chunky Zara platforms or a pair of embellished mules:

Go Shady!

But not literally, wait, yes literally! Monotone doesn’t have to be monotonous and we insist that you bring in some variations by playing with different shades of the same colour. Try purple on lilac, or a dazzling coral on balmy peach. Here’s a gorgeous lilac look for you to take inspiration from:

To play with this trendy pastel shade, we have mixed it up with its flamboyant cousin i.e. purple and we think you’ll love it as much as we are adoring it right now. You can simply pair the mauve satin shirt with a purple pleated skirt and that would be an entire look and a great one for that matter. Additionally, you can also add a blazer or just ditch the skirt and go for a pristine monotone look with head to toe lilac. And Sex and the City inspired purple pumps are just what you need to complete the look.

Play With The Textures

When monotoning, do not shy away from mixing the textures and while this might sound bizarre to you, trust us, it works especially well when you are dressing up in just one colour. You can mix satin with some jersey, a detailed knit with some suedes and what not! Here’s a look in all shades caramel to help you get it right:

We have styled this delicious hue by going for a structured double-breasted blazer that will go beautifully with a bodycon dress. However, the blazer will look equally suave with a pair of knitted crop top and skirt. Some heeled boots will do wonders here and we have found just the perfect ones. However, we have also added a little something for the flat-shoe squad. Rest assured, both the looks are sure to stand apart.

Go Bejeweled!

While monotoning, most of us tend to opt for safer hues like blacks, browns, greys, and creams. However, it is actually colours like green, blue, and pink that provide you with a vast range of hue options that actually work wonders for this trend. These gradient shades provide you with the opportunity to create aesthetic looks. For instance, you can layer on pale pink with a bright ruby or an olive green with a dazzling emerald. We have taken the Pantone colour of the year, Blue, to illustrate the same for you:

There was no way to go about this list without including this gorgeous hue. The H & M azure blue top really has our heart and we have added a pleated skirt of a similar hue with it. You can add a light blue blazer for the finishing touches. Or, you can opt for a short suit and wear the azure top with it.

Monochrome doesn’t always have to be black and white. See what we meant by the endless styling opportunities that come with versatile colours? Now didn’t we say that you can wear the same colour from head to toe without looking boring!
