Where Is The Justice? Everything You Should Know About The Unnao Rape Case

The Unnao rape case, in which a 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, his brother and others at his home in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh has hit another rock on its road to justice.

On Sunday afternoon, the survivor met with a fatal car accident, while she was travelling along with her lawyer and two aunts in Rae Bareli. While the 19-year-old survivor and her lawyer are undergoing treatment at the trauma centre at King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, both her aunts lost their lives, one of whom was a key eye-witness in the case. Following this, on Monday the suspects were booked for “hatching a criminal conspiracy to kill the rape survivor and her family.” A police officer informed a news channel that an “FIR has been registered under the Indian Penal Code’s sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation), 120b (criminal conspiracy) against 10 named persons, including the BJP MLA, and 15-20 others.” The Indian government, on the other hand, is yet to issue a statement regarding the accident.

To refresh your memory, here is a timeline of everything that has happened in regards to this case in the last two years.

• June 2017: A 17-year-old is allegedly raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, his brother and others at his house in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, where she was taken on the pretext of helping her get a job.
• July 2017-February, 2018: The girl goes missing and the family files a police complaint. Post this she is found in a village in Aurraiya and is brought back to Unnao. She alleges that the local police stopped her from naming the BJP MLA in her statement. The girl’s family writes to the Chief Minister’s office demanding that the FIR should include the names of Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brother Atul Sengar.
• April 2018: The survivor’s father is beaten up by the accused’s brother, Atul Singh Sengar. A police complaint is filed following this, and the survivor’s father is taken into police custody in connection with an Arms Act case. The case comes into the spotlight when the rape survivor tries to kill herself in front of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence due to police inaction. A few days later, the father of the survivor died in judicial custody, allegedly due to harassment from the officers. The MLA’s brother, Atul Singh Sengar was arrested along with four others in this matter.

• June, 2018: After three cases are filed against the suspects at the Makhi police station, on public demand, the state government transferred the investigation to CBI.
• July, 2019: The uncle of the survivor is convicted in a 19-year-old case filed by Atul Singh Sengar, and is sent to imprisonment for 10 years by the district court. Post this, the survivor and her lawyer, and two of her aunts are critically injured in a car accident. Their car collided with a truck in Rae Bareli, and the license plate of the truck was smeared with grease. The survivor’s aunts lost their lives on the scene of the accident, one of them being a key witness in the case.

Now, an FIR has been filed against BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar along with 29 others who are allegedly involved, in a conspiracy to kill the survivor, the eye-witness and the lawyer in a car accident.
