#FlashbackFriday: Revisiting Deepika Padukone’s Rich Traditional Costumes In Ram-Leela

When one talks of the big-scale magnum opuses directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, it’s difficult to miss out on Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, the Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh starrer that saw the now real-life couple together for the first time on the big screen. The ‘IT’ couple sure made waves back then, their chemistry leading the audience to the cinemas but a major part in the storytelling also fell onto the costumes, as is synonymous with the director’s films.

Vivid colours and details came alive in the wide range of outfits, especially those worn by Deepika Padukone. Led by Anju Modi, costumes in Ram-Leela have a recall value even now, about seven years post its release.

The Best Of Costumes In Ram-Leela

In this edition of #FlashbackFriday, we delve into some of the details of the film through Deepika Padukone’s look in the movie. Scroll for more.

A 30 Kg Lehenga

The first look of the movie unveiled the lead pair, with Deepika Padukone seen in an elaborate getup. Comprising mulmul, velvet and intricate details, the lehenga designed by Anju Modi weighed about 30 kilograms, a massive number to be worn! Needless to say, it set the tone for what one could expect from the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film.

An Extensive Array Of Outfits

Ram-Leela also put to the forefront a number of vibrant outfits, with both Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone seen in traditional attire central to Gujarat. For the latter, Anju Modi toured remote areas for her research, collecting samples and details that would together fit in beautifully in the costumes. On-screen, the clothes went along with the arc of the story; a jovial setting saw the actress dressed in layers, bright colours and festive attires while a subdued, more mature nature in the latter part of the movie was shown through neutral and relatively subdued shades. Below, some of the standout designer lehengas as seen in the film.

Intricate Embroideries & Details

With Deepika Padukone’s costumes taking a traditional route, extensive embroidery, placement motifs, rich bandhani details and embellishment had their fair representation. Using a rich palette of reds, vibrant blues, pinks and more along with black, the costume designer created a wide range of ensembles that spoke about the character’s carefree nature as well, some of them including swatches that were over a 100 years old! Adding to it were the backless details in customised cholis and dupattas draped on a side to lend an individual touch to Leela’s style.

Hair, Makeup & Accessories

Updos, free-flowing hair and tendrils that framed the face all made an appearance, with the actress’s beauty look throughout the film working in sync with her outfits. Bindis, native tattoos and a mix of subtle and striking makeup worked its charm. As for the jewellery, all of it was sourced exclusively from Amrapali’s archives for the film.
