Don’t Pump That Wand! 7 Common Mascara Mistakes You Need To Stop Making

There are three makeup products I can’t live without–BB cream, creamy lipstick and mascara. Mascara, in particular, is one of my favourites makeup products because it has the power to lift, thicken and intensify my natural lashes instantly. Learning how to apply mascara was not an easy process for me. Sometimes I applied too much product, sometimes the mascara would leave smudge marks on my lower lashline, sometimes I’d accidentally poke my eye with the mascara wand–my point is, it takes times to master any makeup skill.

7 Common Mascara Mistakes You Need To Stop Making

You know what they say, right? Practice makes perfect!

Mistake 1: Continuously Pumping The Mascara Wand Into The Bottle

Continuously pumping the mascara wand into the bottle does not guarantee that the wand will pick up more product. However, what it surely will do is pump unwanted air, dirt and bacteria into the bottle which will infect and dry out the product. To minimize eye infections avoid pumping the wand into the bottle multiple times.

Mistake 2: Not Wiping Out The Excess Product On The Tip Of The Wand

Gosh! I hate it when this happens. The big clump of mascara on the tip of the wand usually smudges my inner corners. If you’ve experienced the same thing, then I know of a simple solution! Wipe the excess product on the edge of the mascara tube or tissue paper to prevent transferring too much product onto the lashes.

Mistake 3: You Aren’t Applying Too Many Coats

One or two coats of mascara aren’t enough. It’ll only make your lashes clump together and cause the curls to fall. You need to apply at least three to five coats of mascara to achieve longer, fuller-looking lashes.

Mistake 4: Using Your Fingers To Clean Mascara Smudge Marks

You have two options here–you either wait for the mascara to completely dry up and then use your nail to gently scratch off the product or you dip a Q-tip into makeup remover and slowly wipe off the mascara smudge marks on the skin. If you use your fingers to remove damp mascara, you’ll just smear it all over your skin and that’s another disaster to deal with.

Mistake 5: You’ve Been Using The Same Mascara For A Year

All good things come to an end (Including your favourite mascara). 3 months is the shelf life of a mascara product. You’ll know when the product has gone bad when it smells off and has an evident difference in texture and colour.

Mistake 6: You’re Not Doing The Wiggle

Pulling the mascara wand straight through the lashes won’t guarantee that you’ve perfectly coated each lash. You must wiggle your way from root to tip to give the lashes a volume boost.

Mistake 7: You Never Separate Your Lashes Before Applying Mascara

To avoid lashes from sticking together, you must first separate them by combing through your lashes with a spoolie or using an eyelash curler before applying mascara. This helps to add volume and length to your lashes.

Even the best of us make these mascara mistakes. It’s all about learning from them and sharpening our makeup skills at the end of the day.
