Are Street Style Stars The New Fashion “IT” Girls?

Summiyya &  |  May 6, 2016

Unlike the good old days where silver screen stars and pin up girls stood tall on their own merit as modern day inspiration, today, the path to fame has become trivial and flaky. One can become an overnight celebrity by making a sex tape, having a ridiculous number of Instagram followers, being a fat kid with a big personality (yes, I just made a Honey Boo Boo reference here) or being as we fashion insiders call it – a bona fide street style star.

Street style has been around for a very long time and only with the onslaught of social media, has it grown into the juggernaut that it is today. These are not actors or singers or even designers or big shot fashion editors – often times these are just people who love fashion and use it to express themselves as best they can.

They may work in the fashion industry or not, but they are always ‘out there’. They oscillate between attending coveted events and being private and choosy to being too available and over-sharing every bit of their life on social media 24/7.

It is only with the help of Street style Bloggers like Tommy Ton of Jak and JillScott Schuman of The Sartorialist, Adam Katz Sinding of Le 21eme and others like them, have these stylish individuals gone from just being fashion lovers to straight up style influencers. From fashion week fashion to everyday style – these individuals are always trying to stay relevant and ever ready to be photographed.

The streets have become their runways as individuals emerge bedecked in their branded and unbranded finery- keeping onlookers up to date on the new must-haves of the season – from the chicest shoe trend of the season to the coolest lingerie to sport.

This phenomenon is slowly trickling into our fair cities as well with bloggers and magazines covering street style with more and more zeal every day. This tends to also push people to amp up their own personal style game and get creative rather than just follow regurgitated trends off magazine articles; in the hopes of being the next style star.

The landscape of fashion is fast-changing, and India is now geared up for the biggest street style star to emerge out of the shadows. We are waiting…and it’s super exciting!
