Sharon Alphonso  |  May 6, 2016

Right from childhood you’ve been lectured on how important water is for your system. And it’s a fact! Around 70 percent of our body is composed of water. It helps with blood circulation, washes away toxins, speeds up metabolism, improves skin texture and keeps the kidneys healthy.

Sadly, not many of us drink enough of it on a daily basis. We either forget to drink it because of the busy we lead, or we just don’t enjoy the bland taste of it. Whatever be your reason, ignoring it can have a serious impact on your health. It can cause you to feel tired, experience headaches and feel dehydrated. Here’s how you can get your minimum quota of 8 glasses the easy way!

1. Coconut Water

After a nice long walk or a good amount hours spent working out at the gym, coconut water seems to be an ideal drink. Coconut water is loaded with minerals and vitamins a.k.a. ‘electrolytes’ which are essential for the body. Instead of buying the carton or packet, if you can, opt for the fresh version as it does not have any added preservatives.

2. Smoothies

They’re yum, they’re rich in vitamins and make an excellent substitute for water. Include fruits in your smoothie like strawberries, watermelons, muskmelons, blueberries, oranges, bananas, plums and pineapples, as they have high water content. Instead of adding dairy products to your smoothie, just add half a glass of water to the mix. It will not only be easy to digest, but will also be extremely light on the system.

3. Herbal Tea

We like Herbal Teas and Rooibos teas – they don’t contain caffeine, they are super yum and make an excellent substitute for water.

4. Fresh Juice

We emphasise on the “freshness” of the juice for a reason. Since juice packets and cartons have added sugar, flavour and preservatives in it, it cannot be categorised as natural or healthy for your body in any way. The best way to juice right is to make it yourself.

5. Soup

If you’re looking for a snack that’s rich in flavour and health, soup is a good option. Throw in high water content veggies like lettuce, iceberg, celery, cucumber, carrots and tomatoes. Soup makes a tasty and hydrating snack.

6. Popsicle Sticks/Ice Candy

Remember buying these flavoured sticks after school? It has so many childhood memories attached to it. It’s the easiest way to “drink up” – but only in moderation as they are loaded with sugar. Even better – make them at home!

Now that you know how to stay hydrated without drinking water, we hope that you will include most of things we listed above into your daily diet.
