Matte, Creamy, Gloss... What Lipstick Should YOU Be Using?!

The humble lipstick has come a long way. From the single finish and limited colour choices that were on offer a few years ago to a myriad of finishes and a plethora of shades we have today - it has certainly transformed for the better. But so much choice often means we are left wondering which lipstick is the one for us. Not anymore! With our lipstick guide, you can choose the right one to suit your whims and fancies. We have one for every occasion, mood and look that you desire. Keep reading to finally know the difference between each and figure out what type of lipstick is best suited for you.

1. Subtle & Pretty: Sheer Lipsticks

Diluted with rich oils, these lipsticks offer a satin finish while offering low to medium coverage. The colour payoff may be excellent but the coverage won’t be much. It’s perfect for college or work or if you prefer a low maintenance look. Thanks to the abundance of oils in these, they are brilliant for dry and chapped lips. POPxo Recommends: Maybelline Color Whisper Lipstick (Rs 480), L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick (Rs. 720), Burberry Lip Mist Natural Sheer Lipstick (Rs. 2,700).

2. Rich & Velvety: Matte Lipsticks

2 types of lipsticks - matte Matte is synonymous with long-lasting. With a rich velvety finish, the colour payoff is excellent and coverage is medium to full. They are brilliant at hiding pigmented and patchy lips. However, matte lipsticks can make dry, flaky bits more obvious, so be sure to exfoliate and moisturize your lips before using them. POPxo Recommends: NYX Matte Lipstick (Rs. 625), L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Moist Matte Lipstick (Rs. 719), Maybelline Color Show Matte Lipstick (Rs 260).

3. Oh So Glam: Glossy Lipsticks

As the name suggests, these lip colours give a shiny, watery finish to your pout, which is awesome for dry and thin lips. The luminosity factor is high in these lipsticks and they are deeply hydrating as well. They offer low to medium coverage and a semi-sheer finish. These lipsticks are available in liquid form as well as gloss-sticks, which basically look like lipsticks but give the finish of a gloss.
POPxo Recommends: Lakme Absolute Plump And Shine Lip Gloss (Rs. 338), Lotus Herbals Seduction Botanical Tinted Lip Gloss (Rs. 221), NYX Butter Gloss (Rs. 550).

4. Smooth & Nourishing: Creamy/ Creme Lipsticks

4 types of lipsticks - creme lipsticks These are a most recent entry into the lipstick bandwagon. They are rich in oils and butters and therefore excellent for nourishing lips. The colour payoff and coverage vary from shade to shade. Creamy lipsticks are perfect for colder climates as they tend to melt in hot, humid conditions. Stash them in the fridge during the summer to retain the consistency and prevent breakage. For those of you who don’t want the hassle of prepping, priming and lining your lips before applying lipstick - opt for these! POPxo Recommends: Lakme 9 to 5 Crease-less Creme Lipstick (Rs 360), Colorbar Sheer Creme Lust Lipcolor (Rs 750), Lakme Absolute Lip Tint/Pout Creme (Rs 488).

5. No Touch-Ups Needed: Lip Tints

Usually found in liquid form, these lippies glide onto your lips like a gloss but in a couple of minutes, they leave a sheer stain behind. The colour payoff is excellent and lasts very long, but they tend to be a bit sheer. They are ideal for adding a natural-looking, long-lasting flush of colour!
POPxo Recommends: Hope Tinted Cushion Lipstick (Rs 699), E.l.f. Cosmetics Moisturizing Lip Tint With Spf (Rs 1,205), Clinique Chubby Stick Baby Tint Budding Blossom (Rs. 1,584).

6. From Gloss To Matte: Liquid Matte Lipsticks

6 types of lipsticks - liquid These are the newest additions to the bandwagon and the latest rage - gloss like lipsticks which, a few minutes after application, transform into a semi matte to matte finish on your lips. It’s like magic! These are perfect for those crunched for time since they are as easy to apply as a gloss but give the full-blown effect of a lipstick! POPxo Recommends: Maybelline Color Sensational Velvet Matte Lipstick (Rs. 399), L'Oreal Paris Color Riche L'Extraordinaire Mat (Rs. 713), NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick (Rs. 850).

7. Balm + Colour: Matte Balms

These balms are lipsticks in disguise. They offer all the goodness of a balm with the coverage and colour payoff of a matte lipstick. They are super easy to use and glide onto your lips effortless for a smooth and long lasting finish. Be sure to exfoliate your lips before you apply them to curb flakiness. These balms are multi-taskers at their best!
POPxo Recommends: Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm (Rs. 801), L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Balm (Rs. 799), The Balm Meet Matte(e) Hughes Liquid Lipstick (Rs. 2,990).

8. Moisture & A Dash Of Colour: Balm Tints

8 types of lipsticks - lip balm Perfect for everyday wear at home, for college or for work. These balms are usually available in a crayon form and leave your lips moist and flushed with colour. Depending on the brand, the colour may last for an hour or so to a couple of hours. POPxo Recommends: Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm (Rs. 517), Maybelline New York Baby Lips Candy Wow (Rs 220), Lakme Lip Love Lip Care (Rs. 180). So which one are you planning to buy next, ladies?
