Those tiny white flakes are enough to ruin a look, no matter how dressed up you are. And let’s not even talk about that constant itch in your scalp. If it's driving you crazy and you literally want to pull your hair out, read on to learn why it’s happening - and how to get rid of dandruff for good. We help you keep that flaky situation in check!

1. A Super Dry Scalp

A dry scalp generally leads to dry, frizzy hair that is prone to splitting and brittleness. As if you didn’t have enough problems, a dry scalp also tends to flake. These powdery white flakes are enough to shake any girl’s confidence.

What You Need: You need to avoid shampoos that are volumizing or fortifying, as they can strip even more moisture from your locks. Look for a shampoo that is moisturizing and hydrating. Tea tree oil and menthol are super ingredients to look for, which can soothe and curb itchy flakes. A shampoo like Oraganix Hydrating Tea Tree Mint is what you need.

2. Not Shampooing Enough

Of course we keep telling you not to wash your hair every day to avoid dryness, but not shampooing regularly enough can lead to a build-up of oil and skin cells in your scalp, causing dandruff.

What You Need: Wash your hair more often, duh! You should be shampooing your mane about three to four times a week.

3. All That Oil

If overactive sebaceous glands are your biggest problem, then greasiness is the bane of your existence! Your roots and strands are prone to oiliness and limpness - and you can never skip a shampoo, else waxy, white flakes appear on your strands.

What You Need: A great clarifying, anti-dandruff shampoo like Kerastase Specifique Bain Exfoliant Hydratant is perfect for getting rid of dandruff, keeping those enthusiastic glands in check and washing away oil build-up. Good old zinc pyrithione can also help. Stay clear of regular oil massages and oily food, though - they will not help your cause!

4. A Fungus Situation

Did you know a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia lives on your skin and is a normal part of the skin structure on the scalp of most adults? But sometimes it can irritate the scalp and can lead to the growth of extra skin cells. These extra cells die and fall off, which is what those white flakes are made of.

What You Need: Switch to special shampoos for some anti-fungal damage control. Zinc pyrithione is an important ingredient in most anti-dandruff shampoos since it is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Try Head & Shoulders Smooth and Silky Shampoo to reduce dandruff and fungus on your scalp. Aloe vera is another ingredient that has amazing anti-bacterial and anti-fungal powers and can sooth your scalp.

5. Way Too Much Styling

Using loads of styling products, sprays and serums will only worsen you war with dandruff. This gunk overload in your scalp, plus chemicals in these products can cause excess oil production, irritation and flakiness.

What You Need: Stop over-styling your mane and leave it alone as much as possible. Try natural ingredients as dandruff remedies, as they are less harsh on your strands and free from harmful chemicals like sulfates and parabens. Kama Ayurveda’s Lavender Patchouli Hair Cleanser is great.
