How To Keep Your Lips Soft and Kiss-Ready This Party Season

The party season is here, meaning a bright lip colour is your fave go-to to shine. And we make sure your lips are always soft and kiss-ready with a few tips to help you prep up your pout. Read on to keep them from getting chapped and look irresistibly fabulous at all times!

1. Exfoliate from Time to Time

Just like your skin, your lips too need a gentle scrub from time to time. A quick way to do this is to take a tablespoon of honey and sugar, mix with a bit of olive oil and Vaseline. Apply gently on your lips – no vigorous rubbing – and keep it on for 10 to 15 minutes. You will feel a change in texture, and the colour of your lips is bound to get rosier too.

2. Say No to Dryness

When our body is low on water, it shows on our lips – and cracked coloured lips are a big beauty no-no! If you feel your lips getting chapped when you’re at work, grab a bottle of water before you apply a lip balm. If the weather gets too dry (which it will), and starts showing on your pretty pout, go to the kitchen and use some desi ghee (just like you apply a lip balm). Trust us, it’s as good an emollient as any other butters you could get from a shop!

3. Use a Washcloth

Before you apply a lip colour, run a damp towel or a washcloth over your lips gently. This wipes off dry flakes, giving you a smooth canvas to glide on your pretty lip colour. The added benefit: it pumps up the blood circulation, making your lips look fuller.

4. Nighttime Lip Care

It is absolutely essential to remove all traces of your makeup before hitting the sack, including your lipstick. Even if you feel like your colour has worn off already, you still need to wipe your lips clean and remove all traces of colour, which can dry up your pout. Afterwards, apply chapstick before going to bed. This not only ensures that your lips stay hydrated, especially if you sleep with the AC on all night (which can really dry your skin), but also helps you wake up to a soft, supple pout.

5. Give Them Definition

Of course, you can give your pucker the perfect shape with a lip liner (and make them look bigger), but many brands are out with chubby sticks, like Bobbi Brown Art Sticks or Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Balms, which allow you the option of giving more definition to your pout without the hassle of a lip pencil or a lip brush.

6. Protect Your Pout When Soaking Up the Sun

Stepping out on a sunny day? UV rays can not only damage your skin but your lips too. Use a lip balm with SPF, like Kiehl’s No. 1 Lip Balm. Apply generously from time to time and make sure you give your lips a break from drying cosmetics too.

7. Choose Your Texture

It’s important to apply a coat of moisturizing lip balm before gliding on your fave lippie to help keep your pucker soft and prevent it from drying up, since most lipsticks have that effect on our lips. Creamy formulas, lip stains in pastels and nudes work well for the day. Our current favourite is Clinique Long Last Soft Matte Lipstick; it’s got a finishing matte effect and is good for the day. If you’re all about high-shine, try Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick and Lakme Gloss Addict – the glossy trend is still huge on the runway. The shimmery shades are perfect for socializing in evenings. Finally, metallic shades like the M.A.C. Moody Blooms, are great for turning heads on a big night out. (Click here to see the best lipstick shades for every phase of life!)
