Imagine paying all the money that it takes to make a wedding function happen, only to let your day be controlled by a group of bratty friends. You wouldn’t like those friends, now, would you? It happens very often, though. A recent viral video is just another instance. While exchanging varmala during the rituals, the groom’s side of friends decided to take a jibe at the bride.
The video shows the man putting the varmala, and right then his friends yell “moye, moye”. You know those men who crack insensitive jokes about their wives at dinners, while the wife literally cooks for them? Same energy. These friends thought that it was their time to shine and take away attention, because clearly their egos can’t take not being noticed. Also, women as wives have always been a running joke – with the intent that they ruin men’s lives. Which is ironic, because this is funnier than the so-called remark.
The idea that women are a burden or the problem is just more of the internalized misogyny. It’s worse that it begins right when a literal change of phase happens in women’s lives.
The good part about the video is the bride’s reaction, and the fact that the internet gets it.
The world is clearly a messed up place, and we gotta a find a way to escape the system.
