5 DIY Hair Masks For The Busy Mums And Dads

Yogurt (Curd) Hair Mask

By yogurt, we mean only and ONLY probiotic yogurt that is 100% natural. It would also be a great idea if you prepare your yogurt at home because this would then have active enzymes that are good for your hair mask.

  • Prepare a mixture of ½ cup yogurt, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
  • Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes.
  • Don’t use flavoured yogurt, this could cause harm to your hair.
  • Do not leave the mixture on your hair for too long, the apple cider vinegar that it contains would cause a sort of burning sensation if kept for a long time.
  • Use a 1:2 ratio of apple cider vinegar and water while you dilute the paste, this would avoid any hair or scalp burns.
  • Also, avoid using hot water, warm water is just fine.
  • If you wish to get rid of the odour that the mix causes, it is advised to shampoo your hair with a fruit shampoo.

Egg Hair Mask

As gross as it might sound you wouldn’t believe the wonders an egg can do to your hair . Eggs have the highest amount of protein content in them and are thus, not only good for your hair but also for your body. Moreover, Vitamin A, D, and B12 in eggs prevent hair breakage, balding, and promote hair growth respectively, and Calcium, which is important for the absorption of Vitamin D.

  • Prepare a paste with 1 egg, ½ squeezed lemon, 1 cup milk, and 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  • Eggs contain proteins that nourish the roots of your hair and in the process also encourage hair growth. It also contains fatty acids, that give you naturally glossy hair, and potassium that is said to heal one’s dry scalp and damaged hair texture.
  • Lemons act as natural astringents and close the pores on your scalp, getting rid of excess oils in the process. However, they are seen to visibly lighten one’s hair so make sure you use them with the correct proportion of water.
  • You may increase the quantity of the products in the mixture to suit your hair length.
  • Using this 15-minute hair scrub/mask, once a month would be a great idea.

Strawberry Hair Mask

Strawberries are said to have natural smoothening factors and make your hair feel shiny, lustrous, and soft. Here’s how you can use it to prepare a hair mask.

  • Prepare a mixture with 7-8 strawberries, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, and 1 tablespoon of honey.
  • However, using a moisturizing ingredient would be a good idea to prevent excessive drying of our hair and scalp.
  • Strawberries and mostly used for very greasy or oily scalps. So it is advisable to use the hair mask, only if your hair type fits that category.
  • It is a fine puree of some sort, hence the hair mask must not be used for too long and only be applied on damp hair.
  • The honey present in this hair scrub acts as a moisturiser for dry and dull hair and has restorative properties which cause one’s hair to glow.
  • Like most other scrubs, you do not have to apply a fruit shampoo after the application of this hair mask, because strawberries already have a fruity fragrance.

Banana Hair Mask

Bananas are rich in potassium and potassium is said to heal dry and damaged hair. They also contain Vitamins A, E, and C which strengthen hair follicles, nourish dry hair, promote healthy hair and scalp and regulate hair oil, respectively. Moreover, the moisture boost will strengthen your hair and prevent breakage and split ends, and also helps in maintaining the natural elasticity in your hair.

  • Prepare a mixture with 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, and 1-2 bananas (overripe).
  • Using overripe bananas would help you to easily blend the mixture or freezing and then thawing them would also be an alternative.
  • If you skip the previous step, you may not get a thin lather and might have to take a lot of pain in getting the banana chunks out of your hair, while rinsing the mixture off.
  • The extra virgin olive oil in this mixture will hydrate your hair and acts as a natural conditioner, that nourishes brittle, damaged, and dry hair and rejuvenates and makes your hair healthy.
  • Let this mixture sit on your fair for only about 5 minutes, or if the volume of your hair is more, maybe about 10 minutes.

Avocado Hair Mask

Avocados are rich in natural oils and polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids (the good fats), making them incredibly hydrating and nutritious. Vitamins in the fruit can feed the scalp and make hair look healthy, lustrous, and hydrated.

  • Prepare a mixture with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and almond oil, ¼ cup milk, and 1 small ripe avocado.
  • Remove the residue with fingers, after allowing it to sit for about 15 minutes.
  • Make sure you don’t scratch into your scalp to remove the excess product, this would ruin your scalp or injure it.
