Facials 101: Here's Everything You Need To Know About Diamond Polishing

My skin was feeling rather dull and lacklustre. No amount of at-home exfoliation and treatments were working to bring my skin's glow back so I thought I'd visit my derm for advice. I was recommended skin polishing, which is basically called microdermabrasion. It's the dermatologist's version of 'exfoliation'. It's a lot more intense than any scrub or peels you would typically use at home. Skin polishing is done using refined diamond crystals that gently buff the skin and loosen any dead skin cells. Think of it like sandpaper for your skin, only a little less harsh!

The process makes use of a doughnut-shaped disk, the centre portion of the disk is hollow and has a suction-vacuum. The disk exfoliates while the vacuum pulls out dirt, dust and other impurities. Microdermabrasion helps get rid of lines, pigmentation, surface scarring, tanning, sun damage, blackheads, whiteheads and congested skin. It's probably one of the best, most effective facials I've ever gotten.

1. What is diamond polishing?

Microdermabrasion or diamond skin polishing is a procedure that physically exfoliates the skin using a device that is made of natural crystals. It buffs away the dead skin to reveal glowing skin underneath. It's great for people with clogged pores, dull, patchy lacklustre skin. We are constantly exposed to dirt, dust pollution on a daily basis. All of this tends to get trapped in our pores and as a result, your skin looks dull, dry and patchy. Combine this lifestyle with constant sun exposure and you have yourself skin that has sun damage, age spots, and pigmentation. Microdermabrasion helps get rid of this surface layer of skin while promoting blood circulation and skin renewal. It helps in revealing fresh, healthy skin underneath. It's a process that you can get monthly as general maintenance for your skin.

2. Does it suit all skin types?

It's safe for all skin types, men and women of all ages can get the procedure done without worrying! It has zero downtime and is especially recommended for people who have dull skin or uneven skin tone. If you have an important function coming up, or you've just come back from vacation and your skin has a bit of sun damage, this facial is ideal for you. It helps to remove all the gunk trapped in your skin and it also helps get rid of tanning!

3. What's the post-procedure care?

There's no downtime to the procedure, it takes less than 40 minutes to complete, you can pretty much step out in your lunch break and come back with glowing skin. If you want to prolong the effect of the facial, hydrate your skin with a lightweight moisturiser and add a Vitamin C serum to your regime. It will help keep your skin soft and bright.

4. Is it effective and how long does the effect of the facial last?

It's VERY effective. Here's a photo of me BEFORE the facial.

Personally, I didn't think that I had a lot of dead skin since I exfoliate my skin with scrubs on a daily basis and with AHA and BHA serums once a week. I didn't go in expecting miracles but I was pleasantly surprised.

Here's a photo of me AFTER the facial

My skin was visibly brighter, very smooth and radiant. My skin looked more even toned and my tan was significantly reduced. It's been 3 days since I got the procedure and my skin still looks and feels great.

The effect lasts for about 3-4 weeks, depending on your lifestyle and your skin. Everybody's skin renews at a different rate. Ideally, the procedure is recommended once every 3-4 weeks for skin maintenance.

5. How much does it cost? Where can I get it done?

A procedure like this is best done at your dermatologist's office. I got mine done at Dr. Sheth's clinic in Mumbai. The process is called an InstaFacial and costs anywhere between Rs. 1,000-4,000 depending on the kind of facial you get.
