While you all must have heard about stores running out of toilet paper and hand sanitizers during the pandemic, a new trend has been witnessed across the world of late. Turns out it’s sex toys that are getting out of stock now. The trend has been observed across the world with increasing demand for sex toys in countries like New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and various parts of the US and UK.
Now, while some of us might like to maintain the ‘sanskaari’ image of India in our heads, the trend has been no different here as well. In fact, as per a recent study by That’sPersonal.com sex toy sales in India have spiked by a whopping 65 percent during the lockdown. Titled India Uncovered, the report has been generated after a trend study of 22 million visitors who made it to the wellness website.
The report also gives us an insight into the huge difference in the shopping trends between men and women when it comes to sexual wellness products. While 64% of the recorded customers on the website have been observed to be men, an increase in women’s footfall has been recorded as well.
During the lockdown, the number of places that have seen more women buyers than men has also shown a 300% rise and includes cities like Vijaywada, Jamshedpur, Belgaum, and Jabalpur. Although, when it comes to the top consumer states, Maharashtra seems to be topping the charts closely followed by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. State-wise speaking, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi respectively stand at the first, second, and third spot in terms of having the largest sex toys buyer base.
The study also throws light on the difference between surfing habits as exhibited by men and women. While men have been spending more time on the website between 9 pm and midnight, women prefer to browse between 12 noon and 3 pm. The study also reveals the age group of these buyers with the majority (61 percent to be precise) of them falling in the 25 to 34 years of age.
Seems like India has taken the idea of going ‘aatmanirbhar’ quite seriously during the lockdown. In fact, apart from the spike in the sales of sex toys, an increase in google search for homemade sex toys has also been observed. That said, the trend is as dangerous as it sounds and a study by Inside Hook has raised an alarm among health experts across the country.
