Tough Times Ahead: Sara Ali Khan & Mother Amrita Singh In For A Long Court Battle

Property disputes in India can drag on for decades. Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan and her mother Amrita Singh may experience this first hand as they have staked a claim over their ancestral property in Dehradun.

Born to a Sikh family, Amrita Singh is the daughter of a political activist, Rukhsana Sultana and an Army Officer, Shivinder Singh Virk. Apart from being a niece of the renowned novelist Late Khushwant Singh, she is also related to many personalities in the film fraternity.

The dispute arose when Amrita’s uncle, Madhusudan, passed away a few days ago due to cancer. Amrita’s mother, Rukhsana, was Madhusudan’s stepsister. Madhusudan’s father had married Asha Bimbat after his divorce from his first wife and fathered Madhusudan and Tahira Bimbat. According to police officials, Madhusudan’s father, who was an Air Force officer, had bought this property in 1969. After the death of his parents, Madhusudan, who was unmarried, continued to stay there alone.

After staking a claim over the four acres of prime property in Clement Town, Dehradun, Amrita and her aunt Tahira are now likely to head towards a long court battle over its final settlement. It’s only last week that Amrita and her daughter, Sara, lodged a police complaint stating that the Clement Town property should be protected from land mafia. In fact, they had even put up a board claiming that the land belongs to them.

On the other hand, Khushi Ram, who has been a caretaker of this Dehradun property for several years, has lodged a police complaint as well, pleading for its protection.

Amrita and Tahira have now filed a court case against Madhusudan over the dispute of their Clement Town property, demanding equal rights for the same. However, the Uttarakhand Police, treading a cautious path, decided to refrain from intervening in the matter. Hence, they ruled out any probe by the Special Task Force. “This is a civil court property dispute and we will not interfere in the matter,” said Anil Raturi, Director General of Police (DGP).

Meanwhile, the police officials are examining the complaints, made by Amrita and Khushi Ram, and they would file a final report in the civil court. They are also verifying reports to prove if Madhusudan had left a will to hand over the property to a trust.

Amrita made her name in the industry with her debut movie Betaab in 1983, which was a massive hit. She quickly became a sensation and proved her mettle as a talented actor. Post-divorce from Saif Ali Khan, she took a sabbatical, and then returned to the silver screen in movies like 2 States, Flying Jatt and Hindi Medium, in supporting roles.
