December 13 is a dark day in India's history. Eighteen years ago, the Indian Parliament was attacked by five heavily-armed terrorists belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). A place which people considered to be the have the highest level of security, was under siege. The morning that looked usual became a battleground in a few minutes with the gunmen carrying AK-47 rifles, grenade launchers, pistols and grenades.

The terrorists stormed the Parliament complex in New Delhi and opened indiscriminate firing. Fourteen people (13 security personnel and one civilian) lost their lives in the attack.  The victims included five Delhi Police personnel, a woman Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper, two Parliament staff and a gardener. A journalist who was injured in the attack died later.

While the Houses were adjourned at the time of the attack, around 100 people were still inside the building. The security forces managed to shoot down all assailants except one, Afzal Guru. He was later tracked down and arrested from Jammu and Kashmir. In September 2006, a Delhi court sentenced Afzal Guru to death--he was hanged in Delhi's Tihar Jail on February 9, 2013.
