If there is one movie that everyone believes Ranbir Kapoor has aced, it's Sanjay Dutt's biopic, Sanju. It was considered to be one of the most iconic performances of 2018 and we couldn't agree more. While most of the scenes in the movie were real, some were deliberately changed and recreated for the audience to like him a little bit more.
In a recent event hosted by the Indian Film and TV Directors Association, filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani said that he had to shoot additional scenes because the first edit of the film was not liked by many. He said that, "When the first edit was ready and we screened for people, they hated him. They said we don’t like this man, we don’t want to watch him. Because I wanted to do a true story, I didn’t create any empathy towards him. I said let’s not create empathy and show (him) as he is. But later I understood that he is our hero, we need some empathy for him," he added.

He also spoke about how he added one scene, at the end, thinking it made a better impact. This was the scene where Sanju tries to jump from the top of his building right after his verdict. He said that this scene was shot at the end and he did his best to portray the exact emotion Sanjay Dutt felt while narrating this story to him.
However, in spite of admitting on adding a few extra scenes to evoke the feeling of empathy, he also denied whitewashing his image completely. "Everywhere I go people say I have whitewashed him but I haven't. A journalist asked me, 'Why did you whitewash Sanju?' and I asked, 'What was Sanju's crime?' I am not defending the man but myself and the film. He kept a gun, destroyed it too, lied to his father and was arrested. I showed it all, his drug phase and the way he treated people. So where have I whitewashed?" he added.
While the movie received a lot of success and appreciation at the box office, things like these are bound to float around. Critics and audience both thought that they missed major chunks of his life, but in a two-hour movie, it wasn't possible to say the story of a lifetime. However, Sanju was one of the finest works of Rajkumar Hirani and Ranbir Kapoor and it'll be remember for all these reasons - right and wrong.
