Living in a country where dowry, marital rape, female infanticide, honour killing and eve-teasing is still a sad reality, women are still given a lower status than men in so many ways. It's 2019, but we are still waiting for a time when we can occupy space in the public eye without terror. And in this world full of peeping toms, stalkers and creeps, the only place where women were probably left alone was in a washroom. But, what if you're being watched there too?
You read that right! At a cafe in Pune, a tiny camera was surreptitiously recording thousands of women when they were at their most vulnerable. What's even more shocking is that when the woman who spotted the camera questioned the management, she was made to wait while the management secretly removed it. A Twitter user reported this incident via a thread, which is now going viral on the internet.
The place is Cafe BeHive in Pune and the complainant even took pictures of the camera that was fitted in the washroom. When they complained and created a scene there, the management tried bribing them by asking them what they really wanted. (Safety for women in freaking washrooms for starters!)
Tweeple immediately jumped in support of this, named and shamed the cafe and made the issue public. They wrote reviews on Zomato complaining about the cafe in question.
After this, the Twitter user who had shared this incident said that the restaurant had filed a complaint against the housekeeping company that was hired on a contract basis. The company even put out social media messages trying to damage control saying that the culprits are behind bars. But, we have to say, the management didn't handle the situation the way it should have been.
The Twitter handle of Pune police was prompt to respond to this thread. They got in touch with the user and asked if she would like to file an official complaint against the cafe. After this action was taken.
We would be happy to help ma’am. Can we help you in anyway to file an official complaint at the respective police station? You may DM us your number if you wish to discuss over a call— PUNE POLICE (@PuneCityPolice) November 5, 2019
It's disgusting that this is the country and world we live in even today. We still can't catch a breath in public transportation, in bathrooms or sometimes even in our own homes. We're happy that the police responded promptly and action has been taken but now these women will vary of being recorded every time they step into a washroom, thanks world, you've made women a little more fearful than they were yesterday.
