Ace designer Prabal Gurung has been in the news recently, and this time, it’s not for designing Deepika Padukone’s MET Gala Barbie outfit. He’s been trending after pictures of him and Karan Johar came out on KJo’s birthday. The designer posted a picture with Karan, captioned, “Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya. Happy birthday KJo.” This sparked dating rumours and people started shipping the two.
However, the designer has cleared the air about their relationship with his tweet, saying, “No, I am not dating @karanjohar. He is my dearest friend, mentor, buddy and a big brother. Pls. kindly read the attachment with my statement and hopefully, we can lay it all to rest. Wish you all nothing but the best and love.” He also shared an open letter with the tweet, dismissing the rumours of his relationship with Karan Johar.

In his letter, Prabal wrote that he and Karan Johar are not dating and the caption was just funny, emphasising on his love of Bollywood, its melodramatic flair and Madhubala. “It has subsequently been misconstrued as Karan and me being in a relationship. Karan is one of my dearest friends. He has been someone I turn to in times of need. He is my mentor, my guru, my confidante and above all, a big brother to me. We’ve seen each other through our respective highs and lows. Karan is someone I deeply admire and respect,” he added.
“These reasons and many, many more, is why I love Karan. But as a friend, as a big brother, as someone who I can always count on. To misconstrue my deep love for Karan as a romantic relationship is immature, unfounded, and frankly, very damaging in the 21st Century -in this time of incredible divisiveness and othering that is happening all over the world,” Prabal said. He also commented on the fact that he has been dating someone else for the past five years and is happy in his relationship.

Prabal ended his letter by saying that love is multifaceted and doesn’t always mean just one thing. “I would like to humbly ask you to attempt to reassess your myopic idea of love between two people, between two men. As a global society, we need to expand the horizon and definition of love. I feel that each and every one of us needs to love whoever we want to love, however, we want to love them – unabashedly, openly and proudly. #LovelsLove,” the designer concluded.
Last year, rumours of Karan Johar dating Manish Malhotra also surfaced, but the director has been clear about his priorities when it comes to being a relationship. In an interview with a newspaper, Karan Johar said, “Yeah yeah. I don’t fear it, I don’t care about finding a life partner anymore. I already have my life partners- my children and my mom. I am grateful.”
