While the country was of a unanimous decision that Rajkummar Rao gave a stellar performance in the movie Newton - India’s official nomination for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 90th Academy Awards in 2018 - it has been reported that the movie didn’t make the cut.
According to the official website of the Oscars, 92 films had been originally considered for the foreign film category, out which a total of nine movies were announced to have proceeded to the next round of voting.
The original submissions of the category were screened by the Phase I committee, consisting of Los Angeles-based Academy members, between October and December. The final selections will undergo the second round of voting in New York, London, Los Angeles and, for the first time, the San Francisco Bay Area.
In the history of the Academy Awards, only three Indian movies have made it to the top 5 list of the Best Foreign Language Film category, namely: Mother India, Salaam Bombay, and Lagaan: Once Upon A Time in India, but we are yet to bring home the golden statue for the same.
The nine movies that did manage to retain their spot in the race for the oscars are…
Some of the most brilliant actors and directors making a mark in the history of cinema, it’s no wonder that the choice is so incredibly tough, when it comes to picking only the best of the best movies as winners at the Oscars.
Of course we will forever be rooting for you to bring home all the fame and recognition for the splendid work you’ve done, Rajkummar Rao, because even if the members of the academy awards may not give you a coveted spot on the top (yet), we’re all smitten and completely blown over by your cinematic prowess. Here’s to more spectacular performances from you, to give us only the best in Indian movies, and bringing home the Oscars someday!
As for all the other awards, we will all have to wait just a little bit longer to see who takes home the golden statues as the 90th Oscars will be held on March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood.
