Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge: Study Shows That Your BFF Can Help You Live Longer!

Meeting your BFF is therapeutic. Having a good meal, sipping margaritas, sharing latest gossip, and ranting about stress at work make us feel better. Clearly, an outing with our besties is just what we need to get through the week.

But what if we tell you that making plans with your best friends at least twice a week can help you live longer? A recent study conducted by the University of Oxford reveals that hanging out with your buddies twice a week is good for your mental and physical health.

Dr Robin Dunbar told the Huffington Post, "The figure of twice a week comes from our findings that this is the amount of time that you typically spend with your closest friends/family. For both sexes (no surprise), having a large, well-integrated social network has a significant impact on both physical and emotional health."

Researchers at the University of Los Angeles (UCLA) explained how women have a coping mechanism termed as "tend and befriend." In layman's language, girls respond to stress better when they have friends. It has a lot to do with a hormonal factor: Oxytocin, aka the 'love hormone', which is released in our brains when we spend time with people we love.

Dr Robin clarified that it is not gender-specific. Men feel the need to bond with their pals too. She said, "Bonds can be formed through a range of activities from team sports to male banter or simply having a pint with your pals on a Friday night. However, the key to maintaining strong friendships is to meet up twice a week and do stuff with the four people closest to you."

Not only that, it's been proven that genuine companionship accompanied by laughter and meaningful conversations are beneficial to the well being of both woman and men.

Hanging out with friends and being around people who genuinely care about you can help prevent the side effects of loneliness, which can take a major toll on your health leading to depression.

So, what are you waiting for? Go call your BFFs, after all, don't you all want to prolong your life?
