Boxing star MC Mary Kom, who is a six-time World champion, broke new records and did the country proud on Wednesday after she won an unprecedented eighth medal at the World Women’s Boxing Championship. She has now advanced to the 51kg semifinals of the event at Ulan-Ude in Russia. Mary defeated Valencia Victoria from Colombia through a unanimous 5-0 verdict to advance to the final four.
Before the start of the tournament, she had six gold and a silver medal in 48kg category. With the eighth medal, she is now the most successful boxer in the history of the tournament.

This is the first time that Mary has won a world medal in the 51kg category. In the past, she had only reached the quarterfinalist position in this division.
After this win, Mary has managed to surpass Cuba's Félix Savón, who had seven medals in the tournament, as well as Ireland's Katie Taylor, who had six world medals.
Moving forward with the semi-finals, the world champion will have to face Turkey's Buse Naz Çakıroğlu, who currently holds the second position. Buse, who is currently the reigning European Championships and European Games gold-medallist, had to defeat China's Cai Zongju to make her place into the semi-finals.
Mary Kom has had a shining boxing career representing India and has won an Olympic bronze medal (2012), five Asian titles, gold medals at the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, besides numerous other international titles. She is also a sitting member of the Rajya Sabha and a doting mother of three. Did someone say 'superwoman'?
Congratulations to India's boxing champ and here's hoping she continues to break records!
