There may be a million things holding us back from achieving our goals, but there is one person who has proved that if we have determination, nothing can stand in our way.
Latheesha Ansari, a 24-year-old IAS aspirant with a rare bone disorder from Kottayam in Kerala, travelled to the capital city to write her UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) exam in a wheelchair with an oxygen cylinder. Latheesha was diagnosed with ‘type II Osteogenesis Imperfecta’ (brittle bone disease) at birth, which prevented her for appearing for the exam in last two years. She has been suffering from pulmonary hypertension for a year, which requires her to get external oxygen support for her needs. And yet, nothing could stop her from making the leap this year.

In order to support Latheesha’s dream of writing the exams, Kottayam District Collector PR Sudheer Babu intervened to provide her with a portable oxygen concentrator, free of cost. “We reached late and could not contact the person concerned. I had to depend on the oxygen cylinder during the first exam. I am thankful to the authorities for responding to my concerns. The Kottayam Collector has already sanctioned a new portable concentrator, the tendering process for which is going on,” Latheesha told a leading newspaper.

Latheesha had been preparing for the exam a year and a half. She was accompanied by her father, who carried her to the examination hall. Her parents are concerned about their situation and shared their woes with a news channel, “We spend around Rs 25,000 per month for Latheesha’s medical and supportive care, which includes the use of oxygen cylinders round the clock. There are many loans to repay too because we keep borrowing from well-wishers.” She has a degree in M Com and chose Malayalam as her optional subject for the UPSC exam.
