From Kylie To Sonam, Celebs Are Setting Terrible Examples Of Privilege During Pandemic

Everything aside, the coronavirus pandemic has duly thrown light on privilege and how it manifests in our society. During the pandemic lockdown, while so many of us were privileged enough to stay safe and confined at homes, the state of migrant labourers painted a haunting contrast. Similarly, there were so many more as much terrified by the novel coronavirus as any of us and yet did not have the luxury to stay at home.

And, while many would continue brushing off their privilege and call it a matter of “Karma” like Sonam Kapoor did earlier this year, this is high time we understand its implications. Sadly, while this has been a great opportunity for celebrities to lead by example, very few have managed to actually do so. For instance, since July, Sonam has been posting pictures of her and Anand Ahuja nicely chilling in London.

They have been taking leisurely strolls, attending get-togethers (without any masks!), and yesterday, the two were spotted watching Tenet in a movie theatre. “At last, at the cinema. So happy,” Sonam wrote in her Insta story and further added, “Big screen is magic.” Now, for a perspective, London is the city with the highest number of coronavirus cases in the UK. Also, Sonam’s biggest fan base and her Insta followers come from India, the country that reported the largest single-day spike with almost 80k new cases yesterday. And tell me, how is it a wise move to document your frolicking-all-around-London scenes on social media where you have a fan base of over 30 million people?

But clearly, Sonam is not the only celebrity who has thrown care to reckless abandon. Recently Kylie Jenner also posted pictures from her Paris visit on her Instagram. Now, it’s important to note that just like India, America too has been struggling with a huge caseload. In fact, American tourists have been prohibited from visiting Paris amid coronavirus pandemic.

And while Kylie is in the city for work, she has been casually sharing multiple videos and pictures (most of them sans any masks) of herself roaming around the city. Well, talk about privilege!

And while Sonam might have restricted her Instagram comments, followers can still comment on Kylie’s social media and they have been doing exactly that as they call her out for all this show of privilige as well as her recklessness.

“You have this huge platform and instead of promoting social distancing and adhering to the laws and regulations put in place for everyone’s SAFETY in a GLOBAL PANDEMIC instead you flaunt your travels internationally when people can’t even see sick family members during this crisis I hope you are ashamed of yourself,” one of her followers wrote on social media.

“Your mask looks beautiful. If we all have to stay home, so do you,” another one of her followers sarcastically wrote.

Think of it this way: India and America are the most affected countries by COVID-19 right now. And while businesses and public spaces might be opening up for economic purposes, we just cannot lose sight of the unabating pandemic. Clearly, this is no time to be loitering around. And the least that those privileged enough can do is not flaunt it over social media as if it’s a matter of great pride. It’s so not! Hope Kylie and Sonam are listening.
