When we saw Gully Boy actress Kalki Koechlin at an award show last night, dressed in sharp Gucci couture, we didn’t know that she was five months pregnant. That’s right, Kalki told HT Brunch that she’s expecting her first child with her boyfriend, Guy Hershberg. “I already feel the changes in the way I react to things. I am more deliberate, slower, more patient. When motherhood comes eventually, it brings with it a new consciousness to your sense of person,” the mommy-to-be said. We couldn’t be happier for Kalki!
“I still want to work but it is less about the rat race and more about nurturing oneself through one’s work. It becomes about infusing concentration and energy inward,” added the actress, who’s known for her unconventional choice of scripts, including Margarita With A Straw, Dev.D, Waiting, A Death in the Gunj, Jia Aur Jia, Sacred Games and Made In Heaven, to name a few.
Kalki met Guy during an all-girls trip to Isreal. A pianist from Jerusalem, Guy moved to India this year. Not many people know this but the two have been together for two years now. “What I fell in love with was his calm,” said the actress. Here’s a timeline of their relationship that we could gather from her Instagram profile.
Kalki posted this picture of the two most important things in her life and wrote, “My cuties💓 #Guy #Kiara.” This was the first time she posted about her boyfriend in all these years.
And then it became a regular feature. The actress started posting everyday pictures like this cute one of Guy, captioning it, “Waiting room faces…” To this, Guy commented, “Haaha, I wonder what is this guy waiting for..?” Curiouser and curiouser!
Dating a guy named Guy sure comes with its challenges. Or does it? ‘Coz Kalki made a pun game out of it and embraced it on her Insta by writing captions such as, “Guy, girl and sushi mania.”
Recently, Kalki wished the father of her child on his birthday with the sweetest message ever: “Happy birthday @guyhershberg I hope that ray of sunshine follows you everywhere you go.” Wait until you read Guy’s reply to this wish. “The ray of sunshine is following me wherever you go. Thanks for a beautiful birthday my love.” Awww!
Their most recent picture together from a beach went viral all over social media. To Kalki’s “It’s always a Sunday when I’m with my favourite caveman” caption, Guy replied, “@kalkikanmani you just put such a big silly smile on my face my cutie ❤️.” They’re both cuties!
A few years ago, Kalki was struggling with the ideas of marriage and motherhood. From being against marriage in her early 20s to embracing motherhood in her late 30s, Kalki talked about her evolution, and said, “I don’t know when my notions began to change, but I knew that after the break up of my marriage with Anurag (Kashyap), I had come to revisit many ideas.”
Kalki has many plans already set in motion about her baby’s birth. Given the multi-cultural identities of both herself and Guy, the baby will grow up learning five languages, including French, English, Hebrew, Tamil and Hindi. “I am aware that these are struggles my child will have to face, and yet I am grateful for the mixture of influences that I have had,” said the actress.
She is preparing to go to Goa by the end of this year to pursue a water birth at a local naturalist birth centre. A lot of women are choosing this technique lately for it creates a stress-free environment for the mother in labour and reduces trauma for the child.
On the work front, Kalki has just finished shooting a Tamil episodic film for a Netflix series. She has to complete Season 2 of My Indian Life, a podcast for the BBC. She’s in the all-woman cast of a play written by Rehaan Engineer, based on an adaptation of Chekov’s Uncle Vanya that will debut at the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa later this year. And now she’s counting down to January when she’s due.
