It Felt Right: Ishaan Khatter Opens Up About Romancing Tabu In ‘A Suitable Boy’

After a much-acclaimed appearance in Dhadak, Ishaan Khatter is all set to woo us with two ambitious projects this year. With Mira Nair’s A Suitable Boy already in post-production and Khaali Peeli also slated for a release, Ishaan seems to have all the intentions of claiming the year with his talent and characteristic charm (which definitely runs in the family).

And while we are really excited to see him claiming the silver screen opposite Ananya Panday in Khaali Peeli, it is A Suitable Boy opposite Tabu that we have our eyes on for the moment. A six-episode story series based on Vikram Seth’s best-selling novel, this one remains special for more than one reason. Firstly, it marks the comeback of Tabu and Mira Nair’s fire duo after a hiatus of 14 years. And as if grabbing a role against Tabu wasn’t a feat big enough, Ishaan would be actually seen romancing the veteran in the show.

A Suitable Boy‘s story is based on the backdrop of partition and Ishaan plays a young man from an affluent family who ends up falling for a courtesan, the role that would be played by Tabu. Now, it can be a really daunting task for a newcomer to romance someone who is way more experienced than him. However, that doesn’t seem like the case with Ishaan. He shared in a recent interview that while the role was indeed a challenging one, it was also a great experience given that he got to bond with one of his favourite actresses from the industry.

He said, “Oh, yeah! I think what I realised is I seek out challenging experiences and I seek out experiences that would give me an opportunity to grow. I couldn’t think of a better experience than having a one-to-one equation and a working relationship with one of my favourite actresses of our cinema. So I think my tendency is to get much more excited than nervous and I couldn’t wait.”

He further shared that he clicked with Tabu and Mira in the first reading itself which worked beautifully for them through the show’s journey. “It was wonderful. It felt very right. I felt that this is what I should be doing. It felt like there is a wonderful synergy between all three of us. And how lucky, I mean not many actors my age can say they get an opportunity to share so much screen time in such a unique way with one of the legends of our time,” he said.

Produced by Lookout Point for BBC One, A Suitable Boy also features Tanya Maniktala, Rasika Dugal, Ram Kapoor, and Shahana Goswami and all set for a June release. We can hardly wait to see how Tabu and Ishaan’s chemistry translates on the screen. Best wishes to Mira and the team for the show!
