In A Landmark Moment, India Records Maximum Number Of Women Pilots In The World

In the wake of the #MeToo movement, organisations and nations worldwide have been coerced into taking cognizance of the fact that women have been underrepresented in leadership positions and supposed male-dominated occupations for far too long. In India, a girl child is often encouraged to pursue humanities while a boy is urged to look at fields like engineering and medicine. For the longest time, even the army wouldn't hire any women. But thankfully, things are changing now.

India now has the largest number of women pilots in the world, in commercial aviation and in the Air Force. Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Jayant Sinha, said in a press conference, recently, “India is the country with the maximum number of women pilots in the world, be it in Air India or Indian Air Force. This is a testimony of the contribution made by women to the aviation sector and also by the country to their careers.”

This achievement goes on to show that no matter what challenges and discrimination women are confronted with at their workplace, they always emerge victorious. Sinha speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of the India Women Pilots Association (IWPA) added, "While the presence of women has contributed to the progress of the aviation sector, their support is still needed to strengthen the area."

Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa also attended the event and praised the immense contribution of women to the aviation sector. Taking this as an important precedent, the government should provide more resources and open up more windows of opportunities for more and more young women.

What can we say, keep soaring in the sky, ladies!
