Darker Than Ever: 7 Things We Noticed In New Gossip Girl Trailer That We Can’t Unsee

Gotta secret…can you keep it…swear, this one you’ll save…

Oops, why am I humming the Pretty Little Liars theme song in a story about the Gossip Girl reboot? Maybe I have lost it, maybe it’s the new trailer! As you can tell, I just watched the reboot trailer and I cannot get over it. Sadly, most of it isn’t exactly because of the right reasons. In fact, I might have found way too many things that are sticking out for me like a sore thumb. But then I am sure you might have noticed some of these uncomfortable details as well. Well, care to compare the notes? Read on!

Original Gossip Girl Deja Vu

While the Gossip Girl makers might claim that they have roped in an entirely unique cast, we definitely sense echoes of the original characters. For instance, Otto “Obie” Bergmann IV (played by Eli Brown) looks like Dan Humphrey. There is no unseeing the noodle hair. Audrey Hope (Emily Alyn Lind) looks so much like Blair Waldorf, it’s uncanny. Also, pretty sure that whatever Chuck Bass lacked has been made up for through Max Wolfe (Thomas Doherty). Think of him as an evolved Chuck if you may.

Darker Than Before

Remember when Serena felt guilty for accidentally killing a boy who overdosed on cocaine? Well, that was the darkest that the original Gossip Girl ever got. However, the reboot trailer makes us sure that this is going to be much darker and sinister than the original show. Part of us suspects that they are going to build upon the murder angle and further explore it in the reboot. We are thinking somewhat of a Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars crossover here. Is that what we asked for? I didn’t for sure.

The Chills!

Is it just us or do you also feel like the trailer very subtly gets into our heads while it perfectly captures the zeitgeist of the current times? “You’ve gotten so comfortable thinking you’re in control,  your image, your actions, the narrative but you forgot one thing – I can see you. And before I’m through I’ll make sure you see me too,” Kristen Bell says as the omniscient narrator.” Re-watch the trailer and along with the characters, you too will feel like you are being watched.

This sounds like a very impactful narrative angle amid the constant discussion of the surveillance state and how we are constantly being watched. Glossy and golden as all of it might look, the show seems to be capturing the everyday vibe in the most nuanced way as well. Now, appreciable as it might be, it is also making us kinda uncomfortable. We don’t watch Gossip Girl to face our realities, we watch it to escape!

New Trends Alert Already But Are We Ready For It?

Twitter

Remember when all we wanted to wear were Serena’s chiffon maxis and Blair’s skater dresses. Guess all it takes is a teeny tiny trailer to give way to new trends. On that note: watch out for man piercings, statement hairdos (bye-bye poker-straight beauties) corset layers, delicate Swarovski chokers, glossy lips, and ALL THINGS GOLD! Pretty sure that all of this is going to be big as soon as we finally have the reboot streaming. That said we really could have done without all that chunky gold and uncomfortable fashion vibe! Given the current mood, would have been nice had they incorporated a little bit of relaxed, laidback glamm. Seriously, no one wants corsets right now! However, we might be on board with the glossy lips.

Wassup With Evan Mock’s Face?

It must be pretty serious if we had to dedicate an entire subhead to a character and guess it is. All that we want to ask is–what the hell is going on with Evan Mock’s face? Seriously, what is that weird highlight/ face mask situation? Somebody, please answer this soon ‘coz whatever they have done with that gorgeous face is making us really really uncomfortable.

Not Sure About Who We Love But Tots Sure About Who We Hate

From her chunky gold jewels to her mean girl stance, there isn’t one thing about Monet De Haan (Savannah Smith) that we like. The fact that she happens to be one of the central characters (in the league of Blair and Serena) does not help the case. It’s 2021 and we were kinda hoping that the Gossip Girl makers would do away with the ‘be submissive to the mean girl’ narrative. As of now, don’t see that happening at all.

Too Many Characters!

Really having a “my eyes, my eyes’ situation here given all that gold and so many characters in the trailer. It is just too much to handle and apart from Evan Mock’s hauntingly weird face shiz and Savannah Smith’s catty gaze, it kinda gets impossible to form our first impressions. I mean what even is the point of a teaser if we can’t do that. To me, it feels like the characters have been jammed into each other and I would have really preferred it had they taken it slow and easy, granny style.
