As Producers Gear Up For Digital Releases, Here Are Six Films That We Can’t Wait To Watch

Earlier this year, producer Dinesh Vijan took the tough call of releasing Irrfan Khan starter Angrezi Medium on Amazon Prime within a month after its theatrical release. A first in the cinematic space, the call had to be taken because of the film’s poor box office collections owing to the coronavirus crisis. And while many other producers have kept the release of their movie stalled through the lockdown, it looks like they are beginning to change their minds. 

Recently, Shoojit Sircar directorial Gulabo Sitabo was slated for an OTT release amid all the pandemic uncertainties. Likewise, overseas film producers are also beginning to consider the idea of online release with some illustrious names coming forward and taking a plunge. Coronavirus has drastically altered the world as we know it and clearly, the film industry has also been affected. Now, the best thing to do in the present situation would be to rejoice in the fact that we’d be able to enjoy some of the finest cinematic picks within the comforts of our homes. Gulabo Sitabo

It was recently announced by the cast of Gulabo Sitabo that the film is all set for an OTT release on June 12th. Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan starter, the film is slated for an online release on Amazon Prime and comes with the promise of treating the audience with ‘Ek Priceless Jodi.’ Directed by Vicky Donor fame Shoojit Sircar, it is a slice-of-life, drama-comedy that traces the story of Mirza (Amitabh Bachchan) and Baankey (Ayushmann Khurrana).

Laxmmi Bomb

Earlier slated for an Eid release, Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani starrer Laxmmi Bomb has already been postponed once and is now looking at an OTT release in the month of June. As per the latest media reports, the horror-comedy is speculated to be released on Disney+ Hotstar.

Shakuntala Devi

As announced by the film’s cast last week, biographical drama Shakuntala Devi would be soon released on Amazon Prime. “Thrilled that we will be able to entertain you in these unprecedented times,” says Vidya Balan, who plays the lead role in the film. This Anu Menon directorial follows the journey of the real-life genius Shakuntala Devi (played by Vidya Balan), who is regarded as ‘human-computer’ and ‘mental calculator’ for her prowess to make the most complex of calculations on her fingertips.

Scoob

While Scoob was all set for a grand cinematic release earlier this year, the film is now available online on-demand. Available on streaming services like Apple TV/iTunes, Vudu, Amazon Prime Video, FandangoNow, and Google Play, the film can be purchased online. 

It has been 15 years since Scooby-Doo last featured on the screen and thus the anticipation for this movie has been really high all this while. Add to it the fact that the film has vocals from Will Forte, Gina Rodriguez, Zac Efron, Amanda Seyfried, Mark Wahlberg, Jason Isaacs, Ken Jeong, and Tracy Morgan and you’d know how big of a release lies at your easy disposal, all thanks to digital streaming services.  

Artemis Fowl

All set to skip its June theatrical release, Colin Farrell and Ferdia Shaw starter Artemis Fowl would also be seeing an OTT release next month. Based on the story of a 12-year-old genius, the film would be available on Disney+ Hotstar form June 12. Based on Eoin Colfer’s popular book, the film follows the journey of a genius kid who is looking into his father’s mysterious disappearance. 

The King of Staten Island

Just like Scoob, The King of Staten Island too is all set for a Video On Demand in June this year. After the success of Trolls Worlds Tour’s online release, the Universal studio seems to be excited for this one now. However, debutant Pete Davidson seems to be having a tough time this year. His first film Big Time Adolescence was rushed for a digital release in March earlier, and now The King of Staten Island is just skipping a theatrical release too. Let’s see what this one might have in store for Pete.
