#NotMyDeepika: Fans Protest Amid Rumours of DP Working With MeToo-Accused Luv Ranjan

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has become an international icon. Named one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2018 by Times, she is the face of several brands and has multiple projects in her kitty. Recently, there have been rumours that the actress will soon feature in a film with ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor.

Ranbir and Deepika were spotted at director Luv Ranjan’s home by the paparazzi. The netizens were quick to jump the gun and speculate that the two actors were there at the director’s house to discuss an upcoming project. However, Deepika’s fans were not happy with the news, so they started the #NotMyDeepika hashtag on Twitter.

Why this outrage, you ask? Luv Ranjan has been accused of sexual harassment and he is not a popular director right now, for his movie (Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Pyaar Ka Punchnama) reek of misogyny. Luv is among the many Bollywood personalities who have been called out by various women in the #MeToo movement.

#NotMyDeepika has been trending online and Deepika’s fans are vociferously protesting the possibility of their favourite actor working with a filmmaker who’s been accused of harassing women. Many Twitter users are asking her to rethink her choice of working with an accused. One of her fans said, “You’ll lose respect and credentials as an artist. Don’t do this,” while another said, “Girl your a** better be not signing that luvrat movie or we going unstanning.”

Luv Ranjan has been accused of making movies that aren’t respectful of women. His last film, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, which was a box office success, was labelled ‘misogynistic’ by critics. One of the critics said in his review, “Women, according to Luv Ranjan are either manipulators, gold diggers, bimbos or perhaps a combination of all three.”

Responding to these statements like these, the filmmaker said, “We always knew we were making a film that would appeal to the youth. Critics called the film anti-women, misogynistic… But that didn’t bother me. I was looking beyond the criticism.” The film was a commercial success at the box office and went on to make more than Rs 100 crores.

Well, DP’s fans are sincerely hoping that the actress will turn down the project. “It’s refreshing to see a fandom in India that actually holds their idol accountable. I really really hope that she isn’t working with him.”
