Mumbai and Delhi may be competing with each other when it comes to a lot of things but here's one thing that they both have aced, together. And, it's definitely not what you think it is. It has something to do with the potheads! Yes! You read that right.
Delhi and Mumbai are amongst the top ten cities that have the highest consumption of cannabis per year. According to a study by Seedo, an Isreal-based firm that sells electronic devices to grow weed at home, the list is here.
New Delhi is just behind Karachi, Pakistan and New York, USA with a total consumption of 38.26 metric tons of weed consumption every year. Mumbai, on the other hand, holds the sixth position with 32.38 metric tons. The list also includes a few countries like London and Cairo where cannabis consumption is illegal!
The cultivation (or trade) of hash and weed is partially restricted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of India. But the Indian government allows the licensed cultivation for strictly industrial purposes. The illegal production can lead you to jail for up to 10 years if caught.
Fun fact: Delhi and Mumbai are amongst the cheapest places to get marijuana which may cost you up to Rs 250 for around 10 grams of weed.
Legalizing cannabis consumption has been a topic of discussion recently. While some suggested it for medicinal purposes, others just cited benefits of smoking up. While we're not sure if it might happen anytime soon or not, but we can sure say that Delhiites and Mumbaikars love the 'highs' in life!
