Not All Heroes Wear Capes: Delhi Gurudwara Offers Free Meals, Quarantine Space Amid Crisis

Coronavirus has claimed over 12,000 lives globally and nine across India. The deadly virus is rapidly spreading and we have about 446 active cases in our country (according to the latest data released by the govt). Most of the hospitals are struggling to ensure a sufficient number of beds as there are not many isolation wards. At a time when panic is rising by the day, what humanity needs is comfort, kindness, and love and this is exactly what the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) is offering with their heartwarming gesture.

In a letter to CM Arvind Kejriwal, DSGMC president, Majinder Singh Sirsa has assured that the gurudwara committee will provide Sarai of Majnu Ka Tila Sahib as a quarantine facility. Sirsa further suggested that the Sikh community stands by the govt at this time and will support them in all their preventive measures. Other than this, the DSGMC has also offered to provide langar (meal) for the poor across Delhi.

Quarantine facilities have been set up in all the 20 rooms in the inn that have modern facilities and are equipped to make the COVID-19 patients feel comfortable. The committee has also promised to take care of their medication. According to media reports, Sirsa has said that the Gurdwara Committee is fully prepared to provide packed food packets to government agencies and other needy institutions. “We can give 10 lakh food packets immediately to the government,” said the DSGMC Chief. He also ensured that the committee will provide a safe environment, parking space and separate rooms for health staff at the Sarai (inn).

The support comes after CM Kejriwal had appealed the citizens of Delhi to cooperate with the government during the lockdown period between March 23 to March 31. Kejriwal had also clearly stated that the poor are the most affected by the lockdown. “We have taken whatever measures needed to prevent scarcity of food, but if you still find anyone struggling for food, do help them. We need to fight this battle together,” said CM Kejriwal earlier.

The national capital has a total of 30 active cases as of now and making others are being tested. Meanwhile, the Delhi govt is also doing the best it can to help those in need in these unprecedented times. CM Arvind Kejriwal has announced that Rs 4,000- 5,000 pension will be paid to 8.5 lakh beneficiaries by April 7; free rations with 50% more quantity than normal entitlements will be given to 72 lakh beneficiaries; free lunch and dinner will be provided to each and every person at all Delhi govt night shelters; GST will be waived to make paid hotel facility more affordable for those quarantined.

Let us all stay indoors, be kind, considerate and cautious. Let us help each other in fighting COVID-19. #StayHomeStaySafe
