Remember Priya Prakash Varrier? The teen sensation who took the internet by a storm when she winked on screen? She stole hearts nationwide with her charm in the song, Manikya Malaraaya Poovi from the movie, Oru Adaar Love that released in June. But somehow Priya winking in this song about Prophet Mohammad and his first wife has managed to insult a few people.
The wink is an innocent gesture between two teens, but an FIR was filed against Priya Varrier stating that it was a “deliberate attempt to malign the image of Islam, intended to outrage the religious feelings and beliefs of the Muslim community." Thankfully, the Supreme Court was as outraged by this statement as we were!
The Supreme Court said that, “It does not express any calculated tendency to insult or upset morality or public order” and there is “no sign of blasphemy," a leading newspaper reported. The Supreme Court didn't just squash the FIR but also had a few words of advice to add. “Somebody in a film sings a song and you have no other job but to file a case,” Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra said.
Well, if you are looking for something to offend or insult you, stop stalking teenagers because we have a list for you. Kerala is still flooded, the Rupee is falling, the petrol prices are getting higher, Nagaland is looking for help while getting none, and movies like Race 3 are still being made in India.
Pick your battles, we say!
