Do You Know Why #BoycottChineseProducts Is Trending On Twitter?

Earlier this week, people started uninstalling Microsoft Excel’s app in a bid to boycott Surf Excel because of outrage caused by their advertisement focusing on communal harmony. Now, another hashtag has taken Twitter by a storm. #BoycottChineseProducts is trending to retaliate China’s block against India’s bid to declare Masood Azhar a global terrorist.

The Indian government proposed that Masood Azhar should be added in the United Nations Security Council 1267 list, declaring him a global terrorist. However, China blocked it on technical grounds just an hour before the UN made its decision. Masood Azhar is a member of Jaish-e-Mohammed, the terrorist group responsible for the Pulwama attacks that took place in India on February 14. The attack cost the lives of 40 CPRF jawans. Thus, India, backed by the UK, Germany, the US and France, proposed to declare Masood Azhar a global terrorist. As China is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, and India is a temporary member, China has the power to veto India’s bid. The other permanent members of the UNSC include France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Since China blocked the deal, Indians launched the #BoycottChineseProducts on Twitter in order to cut off the profits China makes from the Indian market.

In a statement to a leading news agency, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “We are disappointed by this outcome. This has prevented action by the international community to designate the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), an active terrorist organisation which has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on February 14, 2019.”

“We are grateful for the efforts of the Member States who moved the designation proposal and the unprecedented number of all other Security Council members as well as non-members who joined as co-sponsors. We will continue to pursue all available avenues to ensure that terrorist leaders who are involved in heinous attacks on our citizens are brought to justice,” the Ministry added.
