Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap Leaves Twitter After His Family Receives Death Threats

In today’s time, there’s no doubt that social media is the most powerful instrument of change and gives everyone the freedom to express their opinions or fight for a cause. In doing so, more often than not, celebrities find themselves being targeted with harassment, humiliation and insensitive trolls. Recently, one of Bollywood’s most critically acclaimed filmmakers, Anurag Kashyap suffered a similar incident and as a result, decided to delete his account on Twitter.

The filmmaker/producer is one of the most vocal personalities of Bollywood and has fearlessly expressed his beliefs on various concerns in the past. However, after seeing his own family victimised due to his public opinions on the platform, he has decided to leave Twitter. But before doing so, he shared two tweets, explaining the reason behind his move.

The tweets read, “When your parents start to get calls and your daughter gets online threats you know that no one wants to talk. There isn’t going to be reason or rationale. Thugs will rule and thuggery will be the new way of life. Congratulations everyone on this new India & hope you all thrive.”

“Wish you all the happiness and success. This would be my last tweet as I leave twitter. When I won’t be allowed to speak my mind without fear then I would rather not speak at all. Good bye”, he further added.

A few months ago, Kashyap had raised a similar concern to PM Narendra Modi when his teenage daughter, Aaliyah received a rape threat on Twitter and asked him for a solution to such malicious intents. However, the threats did not stop coming.

As soon as he announced his exit, a lot of users stood up for him. One of them tweeted, “So now if I decided to voice my opinions against the policies of the government, I’ll be forced to leave all my social media? Wow, it certainly is the new India.” Another tweet read, “If someone is not able to speak his mind then it’s surely a loss to entire society.. We may agree or disagree but speaking without fear is what we all aspire in a democratic free country.”

On the work front, the director is looking forward to the release of the Netflix original series Sacred Games 2 and is busy with the promotions of the same.
