All The Times Our Hearts Broke During Season 8 Episode 4 of Game Of Thrones

All The Times Our Hearts Broke During Season 8 Episode 4 of Game Of Thrones

The fourth episode of the final season aired today and I think we can all agree that it was an emotional rollercoaster.

If you haven't seen the episode yet, stop right here, because spoilers.

While the episode opened on a sombre note, the celebratory feast after the Battle of Winterfell had some fun moments thrown in. But very quickly, we're reminded that this is Game of Thrones, and to quote my favourite deceased villain (RIP Ramsey Bolton), "If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention."

So here's a recap of all the moments during this episode that I swear I heard my heart break, ranked in the order of sad to HOW DARE THEY.

6. Arya Doesn't Want To Be Gendry's Lady

1-GOT-Arya-Gendry

The makers of Game of Thrones have been hinting at an Arya-Gendry romance since Season 2, and everybody gave them a metaphorical high-five when they got together in Episode 2. However, as much as she likes him, Gendry has no idea that Arya is now a faceless assassin. She's not exactly someone who's likely to host feasts for other Lords and Ladies at Storm's End. And echoing the same words she said to her father in Season 1, she tells him, "I'm not a lady. That's not me."

5. Sansa's Final Gift To Theon

2-GOT-Sansa-Theon

Remember when Theon came back to Winterfell and pledged to fight for the North in Episode 2? The way Sansa ran to hug him tearfully made me mull over a possible #Theonsa romance for a hot second. That was also the moment I knew that Theon was going to die during the Battle of Winterfell. Although he went down valiantly fighting for the North till his very last breath, it didn't stop me from ugly crying when Sansa puts the House Stark pin on his body before he's cremated. He may have been born a Greyjoy, but he'll always be a Stark. #WhatIsDeadMayNeverDie

4. Jaime Leaves Brienne To Go Back To Cersei

3-GOT-Jaime-Brienne

They fought side by side during the Battle of Winterfell, and their chemistry has been building up since several seasons. So obviously fans were ECSTATIC when Jaime used the cheesy but effective "is it hot in here" line to finally get her into bed. And they were happy! Or at least they were going to be when he decided to stay back in Winterfell with Brienne. But then he hears about the shit that's going down with Cersei and the next thing you know, he tells Brienne that he's "hateful" and wallops off of King's Landing, even though a sobbing Brienne begs him to stay.

3. RIP Rhaeghal

4-GOT-Rhaegal-Death

Nobody saw this one coming, although they certainly SHOULD HAVE. Dany's already lost one dragon to a spear attack by the Night King, and has had another previously injured, so shouldn't she have been more cautious about Rhaegal and Drogon's vulnerability? She's always thought that her dragons made her invincible and with Rhaegal's sudden death, I hope she knows that that's not true anymore. Rest in peace, sweet Rhaegal.

2. Missandei's Shocking Public Execution

5-GOT-Missandei

Right before their ship is attacked, Missandei and Greyworm have a sweet moment where they hold hands while looking over the sea. But of course, it was all too good to be true. The minute Cersei captured Missandei, I knew her fate was sealed. It was Cersei's plan all along to push Dany to the edge, and poor Missandei was just a pawn. Her last word before she's killed is "Dracarys", and I bet you the castle of Highgarden (sorry, Bron) that Dany's going to go full Mad Queen now.

1. Jon Abandons Ghost Without A Proper Goodbye

6-GOT-Jon-Ghost

I know this episode saw the death of two major characters, but NOTHING angered me more than Jon being a cold-hearted bastard (no pun intended) towards his loyal direwolf and goodest boi ever, Ghost. I agree that it's not a good idea to have Ghost ride South with him, but you could have at least let him stay back in Winterfell? And when poor Ghost yelps as he sees Jon leaving, Jon doesn't even give him a final hug? Not even a pat on the head? HE FOUGHT FOR YOU JON, HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO HIM? Jon is officially the WORST character of this series.
