Less than a decade ago, were not a particularly attractive genre for Bollywood producers and directors. But, in 2019, biopics made a major comeback from the Bollywood's neglected “serious” cinema bylanes. And now they are ruling the forefront so much so that B-town is has now become obsessed with biopics.
This year, we have been flooded with biopics, almost to the point of boredom. Manikarnika, The Accidental Prime Minister, Thackeray, PM Narendra Modi – the list is endless. And then we have some of the recent ones like: Parineeti Chopra replacing Sharddha Kapoor in Saina Nehwal biopic, Deepika Paduokone essaying the role of real-life hero and acid-attack survivor, comes a series of rumours. Controversies are always looming around big projects. The latest biopic to enter the rumour club is Sheela Biernstiel, an Indian-born American–Swiss convicted criminal, popularly known as Ma Anand Sheela's biopic.
A few months ago, on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, our desi girl, Priyanka Chopra had revealed that she will be starring in Ma Anand Sheela's biopic. Ma Anand Sheela, former spokesperson of the Rajneesh Movement shot to limelight after appearing on Wild Wild Country, a documentary series that aired on Netflix. She was loved by the audience for her witty comments.
The new project, however, is now seeing some major changes. While speaking to a leading news daily, Ma Anand Sheela, revealed that she would prefer Alia Bhatt to essay her role in her biopic and not global icon Priyanka Chopra.
"I feel she (Alia Bhatt) has the spunk in her that I had. Spunk is very necessary and it is very natural, it is not artificial, not cosmetic, it is genuine," said Ma Anand Sheela. On being asked if she had ever seen any of Alia's movies, she said, "I saw bits of a film that my sister was watching, and I thought, I looked like her when I was young. I asked my sister, 'Did I look like her when I was young? Do you remember'? And she said, 'Yes, you do' (sic)".
Not just that, Ma Anand Sheela further revealed that she had sent legal notice to Priyanka for announcing herself as the lead in the project. "I told her (Priyanka) I do not give her permission to do [the] film because I have not chosen her... In Switzerland, we send legal notices very simply. I sent her an email that is accepted there as legal," she added.
The Quantico actress, gave the confirmation in January earlier this year. "Yeah, I am developing a feature film with Barry Levinson. He did Rain Man and he is an iconic American director. And we are developing it as the character of Sheela, who was this guru (Osho) who originated from India, his right-hand woman and she was just devious and created a whole cult in America and brought people here. He was called Osho. I am developing that next for me to star in and produce in which I think would be really cool," Priyanka had said at the time. Take a look at a snippet from the show.
Well, we don't know who is going to make a better Ma Anand Sheela, but we sure are super excited to see this biopic!
