Much before Deepika Padukone made it to the royal list of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was the queen of Bhansali films.
In an interview, Bhansali spoke about Padmaavat being his best film so far. It took him years to find his Padmavati, Rana Ratan Singh and Khilji. But according to Aishwarya Rai's recent interview, the Bajirao Mastani director already had his Rani Padmavati in mind. All the attention and praises for Deepika Padukone and the film could have been for the Fanney Khan actress Aishwarya Rai, only if Ranveer Singh had shown up earlier.
Bhansali's first choice Rani Padmini's role was Aishwarya Rai and it was confirmed by the actress in a recent interview. Aishwarya said, "He didn't get the Bajirao for me. He wanted me to do Padmaavat, but could not get the Khilji for me, at the casting time. So that's how it didn't happen."
She added, "So, at the end of the day, you need to see the casting. If the casting is not happening, then sometimes, it doesn't come together. The intention is always there to work together, but it didn't happen. We both loved working with each other, so let's see, whenever it is meant to be."
As per the reports, Bhansali wanted to sign Salman and Aishwarya in Bajirao Mastani but couldn't, due to the animosity between the two actors.
However, it's hard to imagine any other actor to play Rani Padmavati and Mastani, but Aishwarya Rai and Ranveer Singh would have certainly set the screen on fire.
