Flying Soon? New Air Travel Rules You Need To Follow At The Airport & In Flights

As part of Lockdown 4.0 relaxations, air travel is all set to resume in India on Monday, May 25. And while airlines and frequent flyers have reasons to rejoice, we can't lose sight of the fact that this relaxation needs to be navigated really carefully. Or this will prove to be counter-productive and escalate into a bigger problem as we try to fight a global pandemic here.

Keeping the same in mind, the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Wednesday released a set of guidelines to ensure that everything goes on smoothly and social distancing is maintained through it all. These guidelines need to be followed by everyone including the airport authorities, passengers, and airline staff.

Planning to fly soon? Here's what you'd have to keep in mind:

Rules To Keep In Mind

Here are some rules that you need to keep in mind before you plan to leave for the airport:

  • Only web check-in is allowed for domestic flights.
  • Those from containment zones are not allowed to take a flight or be at the airport.
  • All the adult passengers are required to download the Aarogya Setu App or carry a self-declaration form to the airport.
  • All passengers are allowed to carry only one check-in bag each.
  • Passengers would be required to show up at the airport two hours before the departure of their flight.
  • All passengers are required to carry a face mask.
  • Those barred from availing air services for whatsoever reasons stated would be liable for penal action in case they are found guilty of the same.

Airport Rules

Here are a few rules that you'd have to keep in mind while you are at the airport:

  • The passengers and airport staff are prohibited to make any direct contact.
  • The passengers are required to share the status of their Aarogya Setu app. However, children below 14 are exempted from this rule.
  • Wearing a mask and undergoing thermal checking is mandatory for everyone flying.
  • The passengers are required to drop off their bags an hour before the departure of their flight.
  • Passengers would be required to collect and put on the safety kit containing a mask, sanitizer, and face shield from the boarding gates.
  • Certain chairs at the airport have been marked "Not for use" and passengers are prohibited from sitting on them or using them for any purposes whatsoever.
  • Passengers would have to self-scan their passes near the boarding gate and then show their ids to the staff.

On-Flight Rules

Here's what the flying experience during the time of corona is going to be all about:

  • No newspapers, magazines, or similar stationery would be allowed at the airports.
  • All the passengers would have to board the plane according to the sequence of their seats.
  • No queues are to be formed outside the plane lavatories and passengers have been advised to limit the usage.
  • A water bottle would be kept on every seat of the plane. However, no meals would be served on the plane and passengers are prohibited from carrying their own food as well.
  • Upon arrival, the passengers would have to wait for their luggage while maintaining the social-distancing rules.

Lastly, we need to keep in mind that the relaxations have been levied for our necessary travel purposes and should not be exploited. This needs to be kept in mind that we remain as vulnerable to the coronavirus infection during lockdown 4.0 as we were in the earlier phases and thus social distancing is our biggest weapon in the current crisis. Stay safe!
