Remember Mayoori Kango? The actress who starred in the song Ghar Se Nikalte Hi, Kuch Door Chalte Hi, and acted in films like Papa Kehte Hain, Betaabi, Hogi Pyaar Ki Jeet, Badal and Papa the Great? She has joined Google India as its Industry Head – Agency Business.
The actress and her co-star Jugal Hansraj became household names after they starred in the Papa Kehte Hain together. The actress started off her Bollywood career in 1995 with National Award-winning film Naseem. Not only movies, but Mayoori also acted in daily soaps such as Kaahin Kissii Roz, Kittie Party, Kkusum and Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqeeqat.
However, Mayoori said goodbye to the industry, unlike Jugal, and chose another career path.
The light-eyed actress who romanced Bobby Deol in Badal has now made a name for herself in the digital advertising world. Previously, Mayoori was the Managing Director of Performics.Resultrix, part of the Publicis Groupe. She has also worked with Digitas as Associate Director, Media and Zenith as Chief Digital Officer.
She married to NRI Aditya Dhillon in December 2003 and shifted to the US. She enrolled herself in Zicklin School of Business and pursued an MBA in marketing and finance. She began working for a New York City-based digital agency called 360i as an associate media manager. She worked in the US from 2004 till 2012. But after the birth of her son, she returned to India, and settled in Gurgaon, shuttling between Mumbai and Bengaluru.
In an interview with a leading daily, Mayoori spoke about her acting career. She said, "I did about 16 films, and half of them never released. The 1990s weren't a great time for actresses. All they had to do was dance around trees. So, I took up other jobs like writing scripts and making documentaries. In 2000, I entered the TV industry. In a few years, I got married and shifted to the US."
She also spoke about how celebs should always have an alternate career option. She said, "People should complete their education before they come looking for that big break in Bollywood, especially the actresses. Their career in the industry lasts only around ten years. Have a backup option."
Mayoori also talked about how new clients get surprised to see her. She said, "Every time a new client sees me, they have the same question. How come you are here? I have answered it so many times that some colleagues suggested that I record the answer. But I have to prove myself in every new meeting as people have a notion that actors are not intelligent. I have worked hard to make people take me seriously."
