Things Are Really Confusing: Aamir Khan’s Daughter Ira Opens Up About Her Depression

It’s 2020 but the thought of talking about mental illness still makes most people uncomfortable. Thanks to celebrities like Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma and several others who made it their quest to normalise the conversation, people are more aware of mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Deepika was one of the first celebrities to openly talk about her battle with depression in 2015 that got the ball rolling. Now, Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira Khan recently revealed that she is clinically depressed.

Yesterday on World Mental Health Day, Ira took to her Instagram account and shared a video in which she spoke about being depressed for four years. However, she said she is feeling much better now. She started the video by saying, “Hi, I’m depressed. I have been for more than four years now. I’ve been to a doctor and I’m clinically depressed. I’m doing much better now. For over a year now, I wanted to do something for mental health, but I wasn’t sure what to do.”

Further mentioning that she wants to take her followers on her journey, she said, “I have decided to take you on a journey–my journey–and see what happens. Hopefully, we’ll get to know ourselves and understand mental illness slightly better. I’ve thought of so many things to say. What should I say? Why am I doing this? Let’s start from where I started. What do I have to be depressed about? Who am I to be depressed? I have everything, right?”

While she ended the video abruptly, Ira captioned it as, “A lot has been going on, a lot of people have a lot to say. Things are really confusing and stressful and simple and okay but not okay and… life all together.  There’s no way to say it all in one go. But I’d like to think I’ve figured some stuff out, or at least figured out how to make it slightly more understandable. About mental health and mental ill-health. So come with me on this journey… in my awkward, quirky, sometimes-baby-voice-y, as-honest-as-I-can-be… way. Let’s start a conversation.  Happy World Mental Health Day. . . . #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealth #depression #journey #letsstartaconversation.”

It takes a lot of strength to talk about one’s mental health and especially for celebrities, who are constantly under media glare. Ira, who is just 23, gathered the courage to come out and openly speak about her mental health. Not only is she seeking professional help, but she is also trying to keep herself busy in various activities. Ira is a budding director, and also recently got trained in the art of tattoo-making. Kudos to her for initiating a dialogue about such a sensitive subject. More power to you girl!
